SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher has urged his players to take their chance to impress.
The Shrimpers host Halifax Town at Roots Hall tomorrow without top goalscorer Bim Pepple whose loan spell has been cut short by Luton Town.
Fellow loanees George Moncur and Zach Jeacock have also departed the club.
And Maher wants those coming into the team to make the most of their opportunities.
“There has been a lot of change this week but you’ve got to roll with it,” said Maher.
“We have enough good players in the building to perform.
“We will get stronger once we add bodies as well but here’s opportunities for other people and they’ve got to take it.
“It’s obvious we want to improve and we will be looking to do that but the people in the building have got to step up and take their opportunity too.”
Without Pepple available, Macauley Bonne, Charley Kendall and Danny Waldron will push for selection in attack while Josh Walker faces a late fitness check.
And Maher is certain the Shrimpers will still be able to score goals.
“We look at the stats on everything,” said Maher.
“We’ve got the most crosses in the league and we’re right up there for touches in the opposition box too.
“It tells you we’re doing a lot right but we’ve still got loads to improve on.
“We want to be a bit braver in that final third but we want to win games and we’ve done that recently.
“We need to keep building and keep on trying to improve.”
The Shrimpers have triumphed in their last three games and head into tomorrow’s clash in 14th place, three points behind their eighth placed opponents.
And Maher refused to rule out adding to his squad ahead of the game.
“I don’t think we’ll ever say no because we’re working on stuff,” said Maher.
“It’s not always the easiest thing to do, especially in the areas we’re looking at.
“A lot of things have to go into it before we can make signings.”
However, as things stands, Maher seems unlikely to be able to fill the substitutes bench for the second match in succession.
He added: “You can see where we’re short but it changes so quickly in football. We left three people out the squad only a few weeks ago and now we have five on the bench.
“It happens so quickly, probably more so at this football club than any other.”
