Paul Smith

Best wishes to Smithy; nice bloke AND he produced the VERY BEST goalkeeping show I have seen during the 1-nil loss at Brentford in the cup. Without him pulling off wonder save after stop we could have lost 6 or 7 nil.

Actually we lost 2-1.It seemed no-one could get the winner past the phenomenal Paul Smith, but that was reckoning without Luke Prosser!

Nice guy. Had to endure the usual ritual for a Shrimpers keeper...crowd on his back early on which clearly impacted confidence. Was actually a decent keeper though. That performance at Brentford was UN-believable.

Good luck to him, nice bloke, needs to be in the area for continuity for his kids' schooling - some dreadful trolling on the announcement of this on Twitter. What's the guy supposed to do, live off fresh air?!

I've paid a visit to the club's Twitter account. Some of the responses to Paul Smith's news remaindered me why I don't use Twitter at all frequently. To call some of the posters morons is an insult to morons. Good luck Paul in your new career.

He's a quality professional, why did we let him go is a mystery.......

Poor guy, fans have to remember most players are not fans of the clubs they play for, they do their best for their families and their employers whilst they are working for that club. We have also signed Rene Gilmartin (Ex Watford) as the new deputy keeper to Sam Walker and he will also take the role of 1st team goalkeeping coach. I am sure Paul will enjoy being part of the goalkeeping coaching squad that is being assembled at Florence park. Paul will also be working with this guy who has just joined us as the lead under 18 coach after working with Swansea previously. https://www.cu-fc.com/news/2017/july/chris-is-new-u18s-boss/

More importantly he isnt a player anymore and he wasn't exactly a Southend legend, for the majority of the playing time he got slated here.

He has taken a job we wouldnt offer him.

Really don't see why anyone would have an issue with it.

Just the fact he has come to us J M, yes we all know there is rivalry in football terms, but there has to be a limit somewhere, banter is one thing but abuse is quite another.

Top bloke and in reality wasn't as bas as people made out (I should add I thought he was the most quiet player I have seen in my life and I really didn't rate him because of it:hilarious:).

That game at Brentford is still the best individual display I have ever seen mind you, what a performance.

Oh Id be annoyed if a player went there, but at staff level I have very little feelings either way. beside the manager of course.

Feel sorry for him having to drop so low to such a small club to be honest haha.

Good luck to him and I wish him well. He's worked with some great keepers over the last few years whilst being at Southend, that can only benefit Colchester and I'm guessing that's why they offered him a full time contract.
