Just got in so a few early thoughts.

Very similar to Cheltenham away a few weeks ago - less 'hoof' ball and more football. At the back we were solid throughout the game leaving Evans with little to do for 90 mins bar a few regulation saves. Impressed with wee Johnny Herd in his last two appearances - seems to have learned to defend and doesn't lose his position as much and is still a danger going forward - in fact it was his run at the defenders that earned the corner we scored from. Barker and Coughlan were immense together and very little got past them all game.

Young Kane Ferdinand had a slow start (not really surprising as it was his first start and in an unnatural position) but I thought he grew into the game as it went on.Did the simple things and looked busy throughout.

Sturrock and Corr resumed as our first choice strikers and looked comfortably better as a pair than any other combination we have tried and their work rate was first class for every second they were on the pitch. Barry took his goal well and never gave up. The only criticism is that Blair's finishing isn't the greatest but that's a small price to pay for his overall contribution to the team. Also nice to see Matt Paterson is still alive!!!! - a couple of nice touches but he does have the appearance of being lazy at times - not sure whether that's because he knows his days are numbered here or for any other reason.

All in all we were well worth all three points and nice to see the whole team come over to the traveling fans at the end - dare I say there looked to be a fair amount of spirit and unity amongst the squad which makes a refreshing change!! Also credit to those fans who made the trip and made themselves heard for 90 mins. (although Jack the Flag did try and set a record by being thrown out before he'd even got in the ground!)

I put it all down to it being my first away game of the season...simples...:smiles:

TBH the whole team played well and the side actually looked balanced, young Ferdinand was very good on his debut and the Blues fans superb throughout...I was told there were 460 of us there which was odd, as I would say it was nearer 600.

Agree with all said above.

Evans looked commanding at the back and despite not having much to do made a smart save late in the second half. The defence was well organised, Chris Barker has such a cool head, and considering I thought Oxford's strikers were meant to be pretty good at this level, we did very well. Both full backs got forward well- Herd winning the corner for the goal and Sean getting the (lucky) goal.

Midfield worked hard, both wingers provided good support and enabled the full backs some attacking freedom. Easton was everything you need from your CM captain, calm, won the ball and rarely mis-placed a pass. I was really impressed with Kane Ferdinand, for such a young lad he was brilliant and didn't look out of place at all.

I really like Corr. 9 goals now, a brilliant return for a mid-table team. Is he better than other target men we've had or does he just seem it 'cos we're League 2/our team is worse overall? Anyhow, hope his back injury isn't too bad, much needed. As for Sturrock, well he works so hard, if he could finish he wouldn't be playing in League 2.

A great way to start the new year,
UTB.

Just booked my flight for the end of January......................the re-arranged game at home against Macclesfield on the day I arrive...............DON'T DARE SNOW, FREEZE or FLOOD that day.................PLEASE!!! Had hoped to do a three match spectacular, including Barnet away and Oxford at home......sunk partly by the inconvenience with accomodation problems...................but also due to work commitments.

Good for you,Yogi. Here's hoping that you're lucky with the weather.

When was the last time SUFC won consecutive away games 2-0 back-to-back!?!

Not sure, but we've now won more away games by two or more goals than we won away games last season.

It's our most away wins by two or more goals since our play-off season and if you include cup games it's the most away wins by two or more goals in a season since our title winning season.

According to the commentary team the only player that stuck out as anonymous, rather than poor, was Soares.................anyone any comments on that?

Soares started well, as did the whole team, but then had a mad 5 minutes when he looked awful. However, he really worked hard and nearly scored from a solo run in the second half.

I'd say Hall was more anonymous.

As for Ferdinand, if he was a loanee, we'd be happy and urging the club to sign him I think. Good touch, great control and fine balance. He'll be a really good player.

Thought Soares started well but him and Hall tended to come in and out of the game, rather than showing a consistently spectacular performance throughout. But Soares got back to help Herd defend a couple of times, which I was really impressed with, and as others have commented today was all about the team

Great result today. In honesty I think we were pretty poor and Oxford were worse. It's 3 points though, end of.

What really ****ed me off was how static the midfield were - maybe under instruction from Sturrock, in which case fair enough. Ferdinand played well, but very similar to Easton and neither want to get forward. Worse were Hall and Soares. When one's going down the wing, the other should be getting into the box at the far post. Neither showed ANY inclination to do this all afternoon. Tactics, or **** players?

Shocking as it sounds, the old boy was on the TZ coach and in the ground! He did bomb out in the quiz though!!

Right let me just say this was for me a very surprising performance. After seeing the starting 11 I had us down for a battering, but to say that we completely outplayed Oxford in every department is not an understatement! There seems to be a bit of bonding going on and the lads seem to have settled down a bit and today played some great football, on the deck, the way it is meant to be played.

Evans 7 Nothing to do for most of game, but one brilliant save towards the end
Clohessy 7 Very solid, some good overlapping (having Soares in front of him I think hinders him)
Barker 9 MOTM won everything, marshelled the defence and kept Johnny Herd almost in the right position all through the game.
Coughlan 8 Won everything in the air
Herd 7 Very solid, still gets caught once or twice, but good to see the youngster getting a run.
Soares 5 A promising start but then looked quite headless
Easton 8 Outstanding, won everything in midfield.
Ferdinand 7 Well done to the lad, looked a little shocked to start with but warmed into the game.
Hall 6 Disappointd we didn't see more of him.
Sturrock 8 Again the usual Blair, but missed an open goal in the first half when a defender passed it straight to him!
Corr 8 Battled for everything and won most of it, think he has picked up anothe knock.

Subs:

Paterson 7 10 minutes on the field, got in two or three good efforts and almost won a penalty (I was sure he was pulled back)

Support was simply outstanding.

I haven't liked Paul Sturrock, but since Widdrington has gone we seem to be trying to actually play better football. Two wins has kept him in his job.

Just like to say Great Support people, keep it up really helped the team, could see the passion on the pitch and in the stand!

Bring on Rotherham
