Our Targets

This is the first thread I've started. It's on a similar topic to many others, but I thought this was looking from a different angle. Mods please join with another if you please.

As far as I am aware (from interviews by Ron / Tilly the echo etc), Tillys targets so far have been:

Sawyer (Ron chatted to Chelsea, but they wanted him to move to the Championship to gain more experience)

Williamson (Watford came in - championship team)

Bradley Johnson (back in the first team at Leeds)

Liam Dickenson (most people on here say he's out of our reach)

Matt Richie & Chris Dickson (still currently at their respective clubs)

Dorian Dervitte (didn't want to come)

Robinson (he joined)

As far as I can see (although I don't know much about a few of these players) we seem to be going for players who can very much improve the squad. I for one am happy that we have Tilly / Brush / Ron in charge at the moment. We have had many managers over the years who would just have brought in any old tosh when we were short on numbers. We may end up getting through the list of good players and end up having to resort to a few risky buys (like the deadline purchase of Foran perhaps was), but it's better to have a try for the better players first off!

As for whether we get another striker in, or another defender, or a left winger - from the list above I would guess we are after more than one position.

Lets be patient - hey we may lose to Leeds tomorrow & struggle on Saturday, but better to lose those games & get a decent player or two next week, than to probably lose & end up with another Foran.

It's a risky business for Tilly, Brush and Ron. While it's good to see that they are going for quality players, I'm not sure how likely we are to be able to meet the asking price for the players at their respective clubs. Obviously they know what they're doing though and Ron has stated how he has never once turned down a player on the grounds of them being too expensive.

However, what concerns me slightly at the moment is that our league position means that we are not quite as attractive a proposition as we have been in the past, or even as we were during the summer. Whereas we were a side looking for promotion back to the Championship, we are now edging ever closer to a relegation battle and few experienced quality players are going to want to come here on decent length contracts, even if we are paying them handsomely. One wonders even if Dougie Freedman would have come if we'd have gone in for him at this time, in 16th place in the League.

why does everyone think that risky/panic buy? he was a proven goalscorer with 1 minor incident before and then his actions have meant he hasn't played for the club not his footballing skills but I admit his transfer and sages was a waste of money now

I assume that he was a bit of a panic buy as it was a deadline day signing. Tilly had only seen him on a trip up to Scotland when they put an offer in for Scott McDonald, and perhaps didn't know enough about Foran as they should, but had to take a punt on someone. I may be wrong here though!

Foran wasn't a panic buy, he just wasn't Tilson's first choice signing. I believe that was the transfer window that Roy O'Donavan turned us down for Sunderland as well.
