Our midfield for next season

Am i the only one that feels our midfield if we keep hold of them ( gower, macca ,maher and jcr ) will be the the strongest midfield in league one next season, all of them indivdually are championship quality, but not as a 4 , league one however will be a different story .

With kev's passing, macca's fight and passion also Jcr and gowers ability to take on the full backs then there won't be many teams that will be able to cope with them.

All that will be missing is 2 new forwards to bang in the goals.:p

Easier said than done about the 2 strikers though.

Its a big if as i reckon 3 of those 4 may be subject to bids over the summer. However, if they all stay i have to agree with you and would look forward to some happier days at the hall next season.

i think all 4 will stay (although some bids will come in)... and i agree with them being the best midfield in league 1. also with the moose on the bench i think he will be important. just need another striker, another winger and 2 defenders

I agree - it will be very very strong.
Mousa didn't look out of his depth in the Championship so should play well in League 1 also.
I also think Francis could do a good job on the right. His final ball into the box is always superb. What we lacked this year was cover if one of the players was out - in League 1 I don't think it will be a problem.

I reckon that the two wide players may well be playing at pastures new next season - just a hunch (as Quasimodo said to Esmarelda).

Will be good but need competition and more goals coming from JCR and Macca in particular. Could do with a bit of height in there too.

it will definetly be one of the srongest if they all stay. Kev is definetly staying and i reckon macca will. jcr and gower will certainly get bids. we should be able to hold onto gower but jcr could be difficult.

And cover for the times that Maher and Macca are suspended.:D

On the face of it, it does look quite strong.

However, the thing that would worry me is that we dont really have a creative spark in the centre of midfield. What I mean is Maher is a good passer of the ball and protects the back four well, and McCormack has a terrific engine and gets up and down all day long, but there is no one who is likely to charge forward and score or split the defence with a decent through ball.

You have to remember that this season one of the main reasons we scored so few goals is because of the lack of any credible service from midfield. I dont just mean from the flanks, i mean that not a lot came through the centre, and whilst I would agree that on a combative level, they would be on a par with anyone in League One, I feel we may need a little bit more guile and creativity.

Whatever happens, we certainly need more competition for places in that area, that is an absolute must

Indeed. Even if those four are quite strong as a group we still need to bring in two or three others who can push them for their places, as well as Moussa.

Yep, would be nice to have someone creative in the middle.

Maher is capable of a decent pass but generally relies on switching player to the flanks, or one of his looping balls over the top.

I dont think anyone other than JCR will generate any interest to be honest. Gower has scored a lot of goals this year but I dont see him leaving.

Bring back Benno!!

But i agree ... that foursome looks excellent. We have the likes of Hooper, Moussa, Ademano coming thru the ranks, although who's to say how good they actually are. Hooper, at just 18, obviously has the most potential out of the 3 but if we sign Hayter from B'mouth then he should create alot of goals for the rest of the team.

The area we need to concentrate on is defensively. Im not saying bring in lots of new players, but we obviously need to improve defending things as a unit, rather than individually!

Think the fact we are playing lesser teams will assist in that.

I wonder how much relegation will affect us, hardly going to be full of confidence after this season.

Our first game will be all so important then , as get a good result under our belt and the confidence will come back, a bad result and the confidence thing playing on the players minds could play a factor.

A good result presumably being a defeat in the opening game of the season, to focus their minds!

Big "if", but it'd be very strong. Not the best, as whichever out of Forest and Blackpool stay down will have a better one. Just got to find a decent defence and strike force and you'll be sorted.

Our defence isnt that bad on paper, just not good enough for the championship.

However will we keep Clarke & Hammell ? If not we have some rebuilding to do.

The defence must need some work on it. All those goals they shipped, why. Ithink most peoples opinion, is that Barrett, and Clarke are decent c halfs, and that Francis, Hammell are fair f backs.I dont see blues play,so i cant make an opinion, so i would like to no why decent defenders, seem to have lost there way.

Because whilst they are decent players they all make mistakes and those mistakes were punished clinically this season. Barrett, Sodje and Prior made loads of errors last season too and I'm sure that Blarke did at Blackpool but they weren't made to pay by the inferior players they were up against.

Whilst you have a point Beefy, look at the stats Chris Phillips printed in the Echo the other day. Pretty much our worst defensive record for 80 years.
The problem is not that they are bad players but that there is no organisation, especally when teams hit us on the counter. There is also a problem of a lack of pace, Francis apart and neither Clarke or Barrett have the aerial dominance needed, hence why we have let is so many from set pieces. We need more of a leader, a replacement for Spinner, who I think we will miss massively. We need at least 2 defenders in the Summer as we will not go up with that back 4 that played at Luton.
