Other matches over Crimbo

Wessex Blue

Manager
Anybody going to any good matches / sporting events over Christmas excluding the obvious super shrimpers!

I'm up in the frozen northen wastelands over Crimbo so I'm gonna try and get to Hibs - Dunfermline on Sunday.
Might see if I can get over to see Scotlands greatest team Raith Rovers FC. (play in blue, small club, north of the forth estuary, Scotlands own version of the mighty shrimpers)

Could be quite busy- Xmas matches in Edinburgh normally are. Try the Royal Nip near the ground for a pre-match aperitif. I was always a Jambo when up there, and had a soft spot for Dunfermline, so you can guess who I'd go for out of Hibs/Dunfermline!

ps a much better match would be Livingston at home to Aberdeen on the 27th....last match between them ended 3-2.

I'm going to see the Chuckle brothers in pantomime on boxing day, technically not sport but I figured if I took an air rifle with me I could turn it into sport.

Napster, were you wearing your Jambo hat at Yeovil? My In laws next door neighbours lads both play for Hearts / Tynecastle boys. Older lad, Jason Thomson, is playing for Scotland U17's & is looking like a good prospect. Younger lad has Villa sniffing around, potentially an even better signing
Father in laws a Hibee, been going to see Hibs since 89 with him. Normally drink in Middletons or Dizzy's (rank strippers). Irvine Welsh often drinks upstairs there when he's in town. You from the toon yourself naps?

Nah- I was never a big fan- just went once or twice. I was at uni there from 94-98. Took to Hearts just because around 95 or so Trainspotting came out and Hibees were seen to be "cool", so supported the other Edinburgh team. Nothing too serious, but just kept me occupied whilst waiting to watch the Shrimpers back home.

Since 89- so you would have seen some of the violence then? Heard it was quite bad in the early 90s? Middletons rings a bell- sure I've been in there. The only person I saw regularly in Edinburgh was John Colquhoun, who was usually passed out at the front of the nightclub I was working in. (Later became Rector of the University, God knows how) Oh, and Peter Wright, ex-rugby player, bumped into me in some pretentious bar. But the best one of all, was meeting some coach from Queen of the South, who knew Andy Thomson.

I think it was probably more than my life was worth to even suggest a trip to Cambridge boxing day! Its a shame cos the missus bother is there at Uni - i wanted the game to fall during term time and make a weekend out of it.

Steve, she knew that I was gonna go well in advance, so arranged her own day out..................to the Chuckle Brothers

Weather permitting I'm taking in Chelmsford/Dover on New Years Day and according to the Wivenhoe Town website they're away at Great Wakering Rovers on the 27th so I may take in a scouting mission there.

No, never really seen anything too naughty up there but then again I was in the wrong sort of company to be exposed to the Scottish casual scene. Nasty bunch Hibs CCS, can't say I'm to upset to have missed out!
You're right though they were very active during that period which is strange because things in England had gone very quiet by then.
Plenty of dodgy boozers to drink in down Leith, its a ****head's heaven! Ever been in the Malt shovel down Coburn Street? Lovely boozer and excellent beer.

Yeah I heard all kinds of things about the CCS, so stayed pretty clear when a big match was on...

I was in the Malt Shovel plenty a night. Actually ended up going out with one of the barmaids, but that's another story. Oh, and I watched England beat Australia in rugby there when Rob Andrew scored with the last kick of the game. This was immediately after Scotland got walloped by the All Blacks, IIRC. Great pub, great beer. I changed my pubs quite often when I was up there, depending on where I lived and who I was hanging around with:

In the first year- no telly, so out at a pub most nights- 3 pubs were across the road from me- Pear Tree (Goth pub but with only beer garden in Old Town), Blind Poet (cool but dark pub- popular with Yanks) and Maxies (pretentious place- hardly went there)

2nd year- lived opposite where Heriot FP play- had to get a bus in every day- still- there was one good pub nearby- the Northern Bar with excellent real ale- although had to make a sharp exit when I got threatened by a local after we drew with the Mighty Switzerland in Euro 96

3rd year- lived in Morningside- no pubs nearby, but ended up going down West End (Century 2000, Sherlock Holmes, and bars some down Lothian Road- all dodgy pubs with no decent beer- imagine the seafront but colder and more dangerous), then later on Cowgate. Bannermans and Bar Kohl (250 flavoured vodkas- the blind shots were the speciality of the day) were two favourites of our crowd which we went to regularly (along with Subway) for the next year as well.

Ah, happy days.

Know the Pear Tree, father in law used to do the painting & decorating for it! You're right about Lothian Road, never liked it down there I prefer the Grass Market, Royal Mile & Rose Street myself.
