On The Bright Side!

Lucas D

First XI
All,

On the bright side we are not in the relegation zone so things could be worse ;-)

We need to remain positive for all Shrimpers alike and more importantly the team. Unfortunately as always there are a few idiots in the stands who have nothing contructive to say and always project 'negative' energy onto the pitch. It doesnt motivate the players and certainly not the fans. Perhaps these individuals should try saying some positive comments to the players and try and give them some confidence when things are not looking so good.

We are supporters and should 'support' the team as such.

Does anyone else see this type of behaviour around the hall?

Its True as someone said yesterday we are only 3 points off TOP!!!

Yep, was counting the minutes into the new season before the fans around me 'turned'.

Clocked about 6 minutes before:

"$%&* OFF GUTTRIDGE - Why isnt Petts playing, he is much better than Guttridge"

To which I chuckled aloud....

I personally didn't hear any negative comments around me but I'm sure if we're not top half of the table at the end of August it'll start. Sadly, those 'fans' who are so quick to moan when the going's not good will always outnumber those of us who'll give positive support through thick and thin (within reason of course

). I doubt that SUFC is particularly unique in this though?

6 mins, I managed to hear someone after 4 mins, shouting "rubbish" repeatidly, unfortunately this didnt stop for the whole game. We were getting very annoyed at this but the old mans complete lack of knowledge of football made any attempt to ask him to stop pointless. How anybody can announce that after watching mitchell cole for 17 mins that he is "rubbish"(theres that word again) "useless" and we shouldnt play him again!!
Sometimes these idiots really do annoy me

Defo !!

There was quite a bit of SUFC abuse where I was, which seemed to get worse and worse as the game wore on. Credit should go to the chap in front of me, who jumped up and ran halfway down the stairs to remonstrate with the team every time someone made a mistake.

We've got too used to winning, that's the problem!!

the trouble with these w%&kers is they just don't know how lucky wthey are. There was a league table covering all 92 league clubs put out last year. It covered the entire history of the clubs irrespective of divisions. SUFC were about 19th if i remember rightly (has anyone a copy who can confirm this)
OK we haven't been in the top division but we have a good win ratio especially at home in our history.
Personally I wish these people would stay away. But sadly they won't

Agreed, I can understand people getting frustrated but the contstant abuse almost all game was really getting on my nerves. For god's sake, it was only the first game of the season!!! If people just want to criticise and never see the good things then they should stay at home.

It of course happens at all clubs. Remeber the scene in Fever Pitch when the old c%&t keeps saying ,We're $%&*ing $%&*e etc", and one of his pals says "but Reg (or whatever) we're top of the league"
Reg says "yes and we're still $%&*ing $%&*e"

Says it all really.

Some idiot in the East Greens getting on Tilly's case for most of the second half. Also had to laugh when the 'Get Gower On' calls went up - almost certainly the same people who were calling him a c**t for most of last season.

Spot on. One fear of going up is always the fact that the fans euphoria and optimism is just as string as at the end of the previous season, but the task out on the pitch is that much harder.

I thought we took some time to get used to the pace of the game, and the increased importance of keeping hold of the ball. Once the midfield get used to it (and I think Maher especially learnt a lot during Saturday), and make themselves available when the defence are under pressure, I think we'll be able to mix it with most teams.

One thing that did annoy me was the standard of refereeing. He missed a lot of easy decisions, and his management of the game was abysmal (e.g. taking out nearly 2 mins to talk to the goalkeeper about time-wasting in the 88th minute when he'd been doing it all game). Did anyone else think this?

Poor referee (as usual). He missed a lot of infringements, particularly pushing and shoving from dead-ball situations. However, what annoyed me was that all 6 substitutions were made, therefore 3 minutes to add. Therefore, he allowed just 1 minute extra for Vale's time-wasting, the injury to Cole in the 2nd half, and other sundry stoppages. Why is this, when as you say he spoke with the Vale keeper for ages about his time-wasting.

He then added only an extra 25 seconds in injury time for the incident involving Paynter.

I loved the comments from some bloke near me saying

"Always the same down here" to his mate.

Guess he must have snoozed through last season (and probably the one before).

Yeah, what a tit he was! Problem was that 5 minutes after he shouted for Gower to come on, he did, so he probably went home smug.

I moaned whilst having to sit through that first hour, but to myself.

I tend to disagree slightly as where I was sitting, the regular crowd usually congregate. Plenty of them where giving it large with the noticable exception of one lad who was screaming support from the top of his voice throughout the 2nd half. I didn't reconise him but another couple of thousand of him and this club will go places. Fair play to him.

Agreed the referee was poor, but did we really expect an increase in the standard of refereeing just because we've gone up a league? From what I see of Championship matches on sky it's just as bad there too.

As for his handling of the time-wasting, it was frustrating to the extreme.

I think we should just keep Paul Alcock as our resident referee. We'd have got that penalty first half. And the guy would have been sent off. And someone else would probably be sent off for dissent. And the manager would probably be sent from the touchlines.
