Did you see this in yesterday's Echo?

http://www.echo-news.co.uk/display.var.1981574.0.tesco_worker_dies_of_meningitis.php

Please all look out for the symptoms of Meningitis.

Ken was my brother-in-law. I was aware of the symptoms of meningitis and thought that the main characteristics were headaches, sensitivity to bright lights and stiff neck.

This is not the case. Ken did not have any of these symptoms - he had a slight fever and aching legs. He was sick a couple of times, but did not complain of a headache. Even the ambulance crew did not diagnose meningitis.

Be careful out there. It most cases it will simply be flu, but please be aware.

Just read the article....it is incredible the speed at which it happens.

I am so so sorry for your lose

There are not too many replies to this post, and I guess it's because it's difficult to know what to say. Terrible thing to happen. Condolences to you and your family, SBS.

Thanks for your kind comments. "South Bank Hank", you are right - I am sure it is that people do not know what to say.

However, I am happy that people simply read the articles and are better armed in case they should be confronted by this horrible disease.

Jim.

My condolences to you and for family. I read the article and it reminded me of a boy who went to my school named Darren Brooks. He died aged just 15 of meningitis overnight and it really hit home. We were given plenty of leaflets and guidance about the disease but i feel it is one people know little about.

Once again my sincerest condolences to you and family.

My sincere condolences, SBS; a tragic loss. I hope you and yours can remain strong throughout this time. My thoughts are with you.

That truly is tragic indeed. So sorry to hear of your loss SBS - Ken sounds like the kind of fella whom it would have been a pleasure to have known.

My sincere condolences to your family and yourself.

Best wishes to you and your family at this sad time. This is also goes to show that it's not something that is relevant only in the case of babies, children and students as is commonly seen.

RIP indeed and best wishes to your family, It just shows how quickly it can develop and to always be on your guard if somebody has apparent symptoms.

Best Wishes SBS
