This is something we believe will be of interest to fans of all clubs and is the current position of a huge research undertaking.
In undertaking our own investigations last year to determine the oldest Southend United players currently alive, we received some kind assistance from independent researcher Richard Jenkins.
We have kept in touch, and he has now given us his authority to publish his data which looks at all players born before 1 January 1935 (so, aged at least 90). There are two lists provided here:
• The first (of four pages showing 83 players) which shows the oldest players for whom there is recent evidence that they are currently alive, and
• The second (of five pages showing 112 players) for whom no evidence can currently be found by Richard to prove whether they are currently alive or are deceased.
Your attention is drawn to the notes at the bottom of both lists regarding assumptions, etc.
There are five Southend United players currently above aged 90, namely:
• Eric Marsden: the 13th current oldest player, currently aged 95 years, 49 days
• Jimmy Thomson, the 23rd current oldest player, currently aged 94 years, 340 days
• Eddie Firmani, the 57th current oldest player, currently aged 91 years, 198 days
• Bill Punton, the 69th current oldest player, currently aged 90 years, 293 days
• Alan Dicks, the 77th current oldest player, currently aged 90 years, 145 days
We treasure them all, and hope to visit Jimmy Thomson (scorer of our winner in the FA Cup v Liverpool in 1957) this Spring.
Richard and ourselves welcome this research being shared, especially to other clubs shown on the lists, and certainly if anyone has details to evidence any changes to any of the information shown for any player then we would be very pleased to hear from you.
