"Blues bid to sign someone ahead of tomorrow has so far proved unsuccessful."

You can take the positives that there is action behind closed doors, but the negatives are we still have no professional left Back tomorrow. Whats everybodies opinion? Switch barrett to left back and have Spinner and Eagle in? or give young Mark Wright a chance?

Barrett at LB with Spinner and Eagle at CB, can't really throw Wright in at the deep end away to Oldham.........

I think you've got to give Wright a chance. Whats message does it send to the kid otherwise.

Edwards & Prior proved a disasterous partnership at the beginning of last season. I can't see how they will be better now that they are both another 18 months older.

If Jamal wants to come here as much as he says he does, I'd expect the only real stumbling block to be his fee with Rotherham, Which surprises me that he hasn't already signed on... Unless The Infamous Richard Cody factor is leading him on a bit and he's asking for £8k p/w with a house in the Carribean and a motor similar to Goater's...

according to the Echo last night JCR is still training with us........

JCR isn't the priority right now though, is he? It would be nice to have him in the squad for saturday, but its left-back where we desperately need someone. Even if JCR signs, he almost certainly won't start against Oldham.

Even if a left back does sign by noon, making him eligible for tomorrows game, Its an extremely tall ask expecting him to jump right into the squad to play... Not even having a proper training session with the squad.

Interesting to note that Goater is back in training.

If we do not get another player in at left back then Wright should play - sink or swim. I seem to remember many on here did not think Lawson should be playing at the start of the season, and he has not turned out badly.

Wright is a natural left back, and i feel that players should not routinely be played out of position.

If we do not get cover then Edwards should play right back & Jupp left.

What a shame Pettefer's injured. He would provide decent defensive cover in the midfield that would protect Wright a bit.

I think you've got to start with Wright. Neither Gower nor Cole are any great shakes from a defensive point of view. The only other alternative would be to put Jupp there and Eagle on the right, where he has played for us before.

Hmm. I wonder how long it will take for Oldham to suss out the weakness. That's why I'm in favour of Wright as then there is only one weak position.

Alternatively, what about a 3-5-2 formation?

Play Spinner, Eagle and Barrett as back 3 with Barrett covering the left and Edwards the right.

In midfield you'd have Guttridge, Maher and Bentley, with Gower on the right and Cole on the left. Either Maher or Guttridge could cover Cole and still leave 2 central midfielders.

Up front Freddy and Wayne.

Bench - Lawson, Ademeno, Wright, Goater (according to SMS he will travel) and... ?

Time for another youth teamer? Or do we put someone in who we know can't play just to make up the numbers? Don't we get a fine if we can't name a full bench?

Good points, you have left Jupp out of your 3-5-2 combination, and if we went that way he would be a better bet defensively than Gower or Cole, plus he also gets forward well, and IMO a better crosser of the ball than most.

3-5-2 would make the most of what we've got in the squad, but our recent successes have been built on 4-4-2 and I can't see Tilly ditching it, even for one game.

You're talking about the same manager who won't even change the starting line up if its successful, so i very much doubt it he'd change the tactics...

In theory, 3-5-2 Would work well with what we have, as Maher is far more of a defensive midfielder and would provide sufficient cover for the defenders. For this to work though, Bentley's height, strength and ability in the air would be necessary as cover. 3-5-2 would work, but would need a certain degree of balance and understanding between the 3 centre mids...

I knew I'd forgotten someone!

Jupp right midfield, Gower left, Cole on bench.

Although thats not the most pointless text i've been sent, in fairness it also included news about Wilson's ban (which i already knew) Goaters injury and return to training (which i already knew) And Jay Smith and Lewis Hunt on the sidelines (which i already knew)...

It's just handy in the summer and January transfer windows when im at work and can't get to a computer to find out about transfers...

Actually, I didn't object to that as much as the ones I got pre-season when I received TWO separate SMS's telling me about "new" signings Che Wilson and Jay Smith. Firstly, they were not new signings. Secondly, I objected to paying twice when, if they felt they REALLY had to, one sms would have done the trick.

The away match service is pretty rank as well. Invariably the SMS comes in about 30 minutes AFTER a goal has been scored.

Other favourites include an SMS telling me that "Darryl Flahavan reckons it will be a tough game on Saturday - full interview on site" or something like that.

On occasions it has been good but those occasions are few and far between.

When so much at the club is being run properly, it seems a shame that we are lumbered with a service like that. It is naked greed, pure and simple - and that p*sses me off.
