o2 - Total bunch of gits

RHB

Return to Modnomor Mountain⭐⭐🦐
If your webmail account is with o2 i.e. @o2.co.uk be aware that they are totally shutting down this email service. The proposed date is 7th June 2016 and you should receive an email telling you very soon. If you are fortunate enough to have another mail account, gmail etc, then you will need to start swopping over to it. Also all those sites you are registered with, on-line banking etc, ShrimperZone, will need changing. What a total bunch of gits, and yes, my principle email address is o2.

Why have they decided to do this?

It hasn't been mentioned in the email, but o2 stopped providing home broadband a couple of years ago, with Sky taking over all of the o2 customers. It may be a tidy up exercise, but that is just a guess. This is an extract from the email:

[TD]We're closing your O2 email

[TR]
[TD="align: left"]We're sorry to tell you we're shutting your O2 email account down.

Why?
We used to give all our customers a free o2.co.uk email account. Some people used it, but lots didn't - preferring to use other email services like Gmail or Outlook accounts (Hotmail) instead. So, from 7 June 2016, all o2.co.uk email accounts will be closed. You won't be able to send or get emails using xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx after this date.

What about all my emails, attachments and contacts?
We can show you how to transfer your contacts, email addresses and attachments to Gmail and Outlook accounts (Hotmail). Just make sure you move them before your o2.co.uk email account closes on 7 June. Unfortunately, we can’t transfer them to Yahoo! Mail, so you’ll need to set up either a Gmail or Outlook account (Hotmail) to move them to.

Jesus, that's a massive ball ache. One good thing is you start a fresh and get less junk emails.

Seems like a good opportunity to untie your email address from any one particular ISP.

True, but o2 haven't been my ISP since Sky bought the o2 broadband platform from them. I have a gmail account and will probably use that. It's not till you have to change this sort of thing that you realise what a wide spread pain in the arse it is. Even logging into Windows 10 requires an email address.

I did that by buying my own domain. That way i'm not tied to a particular ISP, and I'm also not advertising any particular company. And it costs less then a tenner a year.
