Now Benno has gone

DTS

The Business
Now that Benno has gone as he couldnt really be looking at much first team football I would be amazed if Petts stayed.

Surely if you were him you would be looking at Benno as ahead of you in the team. With Jay Smith looking to sign I make him 4th choice.

Baring in mind I dont think he started more than say 3 games last season at a lower level I would have to question him if he does sign up for another season.

Thoughts?

Petts will get his chance due to injuries and perform so well that he will be the lynchpin in our midfield.

Shame on you for questioning Petts Dave, clearly the most underrated player at the club!

With Petts seeing so little action last season I wouldn't imagine he's on the wish list of many league clubs - staying with us in the hope of breaking into the first team might be his best option.

** clique alert **

when I spoke to him at the Trust do, he said he was really happy and settled at Southend and was determined to get into the starting line up next season

so it sounds like he's staying ( obviously depending on what sort of deal he got offered )

** clique alert over **

Seeing Southend have offered him a contract Id imagine he would stay unless offered something good elsewhere.

Even if he signs on with us for a year and has to look for a club next summer, at least his CV will read 'Championship player' and could increase his options, which cant be great after the year he has just had...

IMO I think with Petts he got little praise, even in L2, apart from his work rate, but the guy has got a superb first touch and really is quite a skilful little footballer.  With Benno I think one of the reasons we've let him go is probably due to a lack of ball playing ability, which would have been more noticeable in the Championship.

As hex say's, he had little action last season, mainly through injuries, so no one will be after him. I reckon with his decent level of skill the management think he'd be able to come in as a squad player when required and "do a job" which is what Tilly's always wanted.  If he wasn't then seen as a long term replacement, perhaps due to injuries to say Gutts & Jay, then you loan a player.  But I'm sure in the meantime he'd hold his own.  And I assume he's on the lower end of the squad pay rates.

I reckon he'll stay, with Benno gone he'll be a useful squad player next year - don't see him getting that many starts though.
