Northampton press - "Unbeatable at home"

Cobblers feel 'unbeatable' at home

Forward Colin Larkin has warned Southend United that the Cobblers feel 'unbeatable' at home.
Town have lost just once at Sixfields this season, and have beaten the last four teams to visit there. Last weekend they even managed to break their away duck with a 1-0 win at Oldham Athletic.

It's a run of results that has seen the confidence in the Cobblers camp go through the roof.

"We look unbeatable at home," said Larkin. "At home we seem to be able to put the ball in the back of the net and keep it tight at the other end.

"Southend have been playing really well and we know we're going to be in for a tough test. But at the same time we've been doing great at home and this won't be an easy place for them to come to and get a result.

"I like to think we've been doing well enough to fancy our chances of going into that game and getting a result."

Larkin confirmed the first away win of the season had come as something of a relief to the squad, especially as they came so close to it in the draws they took at Leyton Orient and Tranmere.

And Larkin has hinted that the reason for the delay in picking up a first victory on their travels may be a psychological issue for the team.

"We've being doing very well away from home but the results haven't really been going or way so to get that first win was great last week," he said. "Perhaps it's a bit of a mental thing because we're not actually playing any differently when we go away.

"We've now shown we go grind out a result, though."

Southend out to stop Kirk

Southend centre-half Peter Clarke says stopping Andy Kirk will be the key to his side beating the Cobblers.
Kirk is the division's top goalscorer with nine strikes in all competitions, and his name has been mentioned plenty of times on the Shrimpers' training ground this week.

Former Everton man Clarke was actually a transfer target for the Cobblers when Martin Wilkinson was splashing the Cardozas' cash at Sixfields three years ago – neutralising the division's top marksmen would represent a good achievement for him.

"They are doing well at the moment and in Andy Kirk they have a striker who is in really good form," said the former Goodison Park trainee.

"He's getting a lot of goals and shall be the one we need to keep quiet.

"Northampton are a good passing side but we will train hard this week and go into the game looking to get a better result because this is an important stage of the season.

"After Northampton we go to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday so it's two tough away games on the trot for us, and we need to try and make sure we stay up there because we are still in a good position right now."

Declaring that you feel unbeatable at home is a damn fine way of motivating the opposition players....

Tomorrow will see us come up against an old friend of mine who plays for Northampton - Andy Holt! Good solid left full back/midfielder with a massive through in, hopefully he has a mare!

Northampton are always a load of toss in my book.

**sufcintheprem reminds himself that borrowing Andy McNab's Bravo Two Zero off of DtS might no be a good idea**

Northampton are top half so by previous logic we will lose to them

BUT

After Doncaster rose in to the top half (as foretold when mentioning the stats), we've now beaten a top half team. The hoodoo is broken and we're going to smash Northampton for the impudence of them thinking they can beat the mighty Southend.

PS, don't worry, my desk is wooden so every outrageously jinxing comment is already covered by wood-touching.

BBC Northampton this morning reported him as injured and ruled out for the game

'unbeatable at home' huh, well they've lost one this season, hardly unbeatable is it? :p

It's all cobblers , and that forward of theirs must be "Larkin" about if he thinks htey're gonna beat the mighty Shrimpers...

Is this cunning punning or just the result of me having a couple of beers at lunchtime... if the latter, apologies!!

They're a decent enough side - defend pretty well, and work hard and all that. That said, they scored with their only two shots against us, and we ripped them to shreds for an hour after going 2-0 down, so they aren't that brilliant. Always nice to get this crappy away trip out of the way before winter bites, too.
