Noel Hunt: Why I chose to join Southend United

Yes I agree, the ones who don't sugar coat everything, in this "don't I'm sensitive" over politically correct world...

Brian Horton will save our club........

Yes, but all the things and players/staff you are both moaning about, most of us see as positives. Mooney, Hunt and Horton will improve us on the pitch and behind the scenes. You've both gone on so much about it, that you're going to look silly when we finish in the top half of the table, rather than relegated.

Mooney will only succeed playing in a 2 as his pre season suggests.
Hunt is nowhere near match fit and in addition has a poor injury record.
Horton is the strangest signing of all time, what will he actually do?

If we finish top half I will be delighted.

Mooney has been used as a one up front because there was no natural partner up top for him. That is being addressed by Phil Brown, whether it be Pigott or someone else.
Hunt will get match fit after a few games, yes he is injury prone.
Horton is one of the most experienced men in football. Phil Brown knows what he will bring to the table. Give him a chance.

I would hope he'd be playing in an 11!

:hilarious:

That's not bull, I paraphrased what Tilly actually said. Sorry it doesn't fit in with your theory, but the truth usually doesn't.
again..... Ask yourself how many games he started, and did he have a fair decent run... Most will agree with me....

Yes, but would you even then stop banging on with the same old same old?

I had hoped that the promotion, achieved despite your expectations, statistics, and dire predictions, would have caused some reflection, but alas I was hopelessly naive. And now you have found a partner to feed you lines! All we need is for Wiggy to awaken from his summer holidays, and one of Southend Pier's in-the-know mates to tip him the wink that the club will fold before the leaves have fallen, and we will have the perfect storm of negativity just when we should be celebrating our return to L1.

As recommended by others, I am withdrawing my Billy Goats to safer ground, after taking them for breakfast - perhaps at the Roslin, as I keep hearing they offer great value for money.

I don't need to. The point is when he came on he didn't perform in the way he did in training. Tilly and the rest would have loved it to be different, but it wasn't.

Tilly even made this comment in a BBC Essex interview, so I doubt I'm the only that heard it. As I said, sorry the truth doesn't fit in with your argument, but it rarely does.

Here we go Tilly the club hero, the player, the man... Double promotions, he can do no wrong...

I remember us on the slide with him, no passion.... Arms folded, barely knew he was there, leaning up against that dugout brick wall, where was his passion.... We got nothing for months, no passion, no actions, no vocals.... Bad body language....at many games you would not even know he was there......the late subs he used to put on, no time at all to do anything......stick to the ladies..... I don't even think MrsBlue will back me on this, but it's worth a punt....

bring in Mike Marsh, give us Steel..... Bring in someone to work with strikers, an expert..... Not Hornton.

Just posted quite an interesting blog post on Twitter about his move

I was gutted the day Mick McCarthy told me I wouldn’t be getting a deal at #ITFC. But then when I came home, my wife was holding a pregnancy stick and I’m thinking aww f*cking hell, here we go. I was gutted on one hand because of the club situation whereas I was delighted for myself and my missus on the other. I said to her, that’s great news, all I have to do now is find a job!

It’s kind of one of those moments you can laugh about and it definitely took the sting out of the whole contract situation. For two days I didn’t even think about football, to be honest. I was obviously disappointed but when you look at the bigger picture, I was buzzing for myself and my wife.

The background to the situation was I was in discussions with Ipswich over a potential deal and we were haggling over a couple of minor issues. That was a Wednesday and on the Thursday I was out in Portugal for a friend’s wedding when the Tyrone Mings deal to Bournemouth went through. As part of the deal Ipswich signed Brett Pitman and Ryan Fraser and I kind of knew then I was in a bit of trouble because it meant Ipswich now had four strikers.

I came back from Portugal and went in to see the gaffer. He said, “I know we were talking about a contract but this deal came about and it was too good to turn down.” That’s football unfortunately.
People ask me if I feel hard done by and the honest answer is no, I don’t. What Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor did for me last November is something I can never repay them for. They took me in on a limb and I hope I did well for them. Even this summer they invited me to train with the guys to keep fit until I found myself a club.

Before I left, I had a meeting with Mick and I let him know that if I was the manager and was offered the same deal, I would have done exactly the same as he did. He kind of looked at me surprised! Brett Pitman is a very good striker and is a lot younger than I am. Deal wise for the club, I could see where Mick was coming from. I do think he was expecting me to have a bit of a go at him, but I couldn’t. He is a shrewd business man. They got a great deal for Mingsy and getting the two players in return was an added bonus. He was great to me and I hold him in such a high regard.

After that I was talking to a few clubs. Chicago Fire, as reported, was one of them. With the pregnancy news and my wife being from Surrey, I felt it wasn’t the time to be making such a big move and we wanted to stay closer to home.

I spoke to Phil Brown, I liked what he was saying and the direction the club is going in. I went and watched the boys play against Charlton and thought this is the place for me. It’s a great bunch of lads and once we don’t lose anyone in the window we should be ok and more than capable of holding our own.

I’m living in a hotel now so trying to sort out a house is a priority. They are like gold dust down here! Getting a place sorted and settling in will be great but I’m also looking forward to getting a run of games under my belt and kick-starting my career again. Onwards and upwards!

Just read that and was about to post it. Great little read and he seems very level headed and dedicated. Glad we signed him and I hope it all works out for him and he becomes a success with us.

If I could briefly introduce the facts with all due apologies.. I am not sure Hunt has a particularly poor injury record. At 32 he has played 300 odd games many in higher divisions with bigger squads. In his 3-4 years at Reading until 2013 he played over 130 games and would have been available for more where for example he was an unused sub due to rotation etc. So in fact what we are saying is he has had a couple of injuries in the last two years- even then he has played over 30 games (and again missed some games when available but out of favour at Leeds).

So if this is a poor injury record then look at the likes of Timlin, Corr, Hurst, Thompson, Bolger, Coker...amazing we risked giving them a contract at all..

Professional footballers get injured..not because they are injury prone. Hunts record is better than many..

..plus as Ive pointed out even when fit he wouldnt have played for Ipswich much as he was 4th choice there behind Murphy and McGoldrick. Even Sears played before him.

I think Hunt has shown us on Saturday that he's got some class, I was unsure when he signed but I watched him very closely and he was a cut above anything we have had here in recent years. I also like the way he was giving words of encouragement and explaining to Coker etc. where and how they should have played the ball into him. I'm a big Corr fan but seeing the way Hunt handled himself in contrast to Barry's tantrums impressed me.
