Newell sacked

Blueeyedboy

Youth Team⭐
Just heard on Sky that he has got the tin tack. Does this mean they will sink without a trace, or go on a managerless winning streak.

Generally you're right dan, but look at it like this:

Sunderland and Coventry had/have a good base of players, they just needed a good manager to get them working. Luton do not have this base of players. Thus, they're probably going to end up going the way they are, or maybe doing marginally better.

Was wondering what was coming after reading his comments on the Beeb this morning .Has obviously been at loggerheads with the Board for ages and has got out now in the hope of keeping his reputation intact .

If I was a Luton fan I would be pretty worried tonight

Luton have sacked manager Mike Newell with the club battling against relegation from the Championship.

The club dropped to second from bottom in the Championship after being beaten 2-1 by Hull on Tuesday.

Newell criticised the Kenilworth Road board after the game and blamed Luton's plight on the fact that he has had to sell the club's best players.

A Luton statement said Newell's contract had been "terminated with immediate effect".

The club added: "There will be no further comment at present but there will be a further statement in due course."

Luton have lost their last five games, including the 2-1 defeat to fellow strugglers Hull and a 1-0 loss at a Leeds side also battling the drop.

Cutis Davies, Rowan Vine, Carlos Edwards, Steve Howard and Kevin Nicholls have all been sold during the past two seasons.

Newell cited this as a major reason for the club's downfall combined with the majority of the funds from the departures not being made available to him.

"The reason we're in this position is because we've sold our best players," he said after the defeat to Hull.

"Where's the £9m gone? Give that to me and I'll get five experienced players in, I'll pay them fortunes and we'll get ourselves out of it.

"It takes three or four years to build a reputation as a decent manager and three months to lose that reputation. But if you take the four best players out of any team it will hurt them."

Newell has been a controversial figure in his time at Luton and is famous for his comments criticising the practices of certain agents in football.

He was also fined for an outburst against female assistant referee Amy Rayner in November 2006.

I'm guessing that the board got sick of his outburst and sacked him. i saw the interview after the hull game and that is bound to **** off the board even though all the things he has said are true, you can't expect to sell your best players and still stay in a league like the championship!

Personally, I think its a bit harsh that Luton should give Newell the Spanish Archer, as he has been forced to sell his best players this term with not a lot of resource and he has proved he is capable of mixing it in this league before.

Despite his sometimes outspoken views, I like the guy and hope he finds a new job soon. As for Luton Town FC, lets hope that they coninue to slide as that will be one less for us to worry about

Andy

this aint good cos most teams that sack their managers go on a decent run after e.g hull, coventry, sunderland

My thoughts exactly. And by the time we play them at the end of April a new man might just have turned it around. On the sacking I think the mere prospect of losing to southend was enough to get him the bullet.

i might be on my own here but i really like Mike Newell, i think he actually had the balls to say what he felt, which other managers don't really do. Also i'm worried that now they'll go on an unbeaten streak till the end of the season

They have appointed Brian Stein as caretaker - so plenty of hope there that he will be a disaster for them.

Wonder what his brother Edwin is up to these days?
I still feel he was the secret behind's Fry's success at Southend, backed up by an in-flight conversation with Gary Poole a couple of years ago!

This was probably the most inevitable thing thats happened in football all season. It was always a matter of time; outspoken views, FA charges of sexism, poor performances and then a slagging off of the board.

But he did wonders there considering the size of the club. Normally I think a sacking can turn a team around, but Luton look like a team in freefall - even their captain says on the BBC site that staying up is going to be more or less impossible.

Newell will get another job and if he can curb his views (which in this baby-cotton-wrapped day and age in sport you seemingly have to) he'll do fine.

Luton, I don't thnk, will be so lucky...

Bye bye Luton!!

Poor Newell:

Lost Howard at the start of season
Was made to sell Vine and Edwards in Jan, what chance did that leave him with

since he has been in charge £9M worth of players have been sold, and he has not seen 1p of this to buy anyone in!!

I've a mate who is a Luton fan and is off skydiving for the first time today.

He didn't take kindly to my words of advice of when free-falling don't sack your manager.

I actually wonder if Newell has been trying to get the sack. The board have certainly undermined his position by repeatedly selling all their best players, but Newell seems to be tempting the Spanish Archer by his comments ranging from his latest whinge to the comments about lineswomen. Its almost as if he wanted to get sacked before Luton went down so he wouldn't have a relegation on his CV.
