New Southend Song - ‘Blue Soul’

For anyone who missed it, I played my new song ‘Blue Soul’ at BoxPark Wembley before the game, it’s written about our club!

I’ve tried to get a lot of references into the whole Roots Hall experience, the town and our battle back from the dark days into the lyrics!

Going into the studio to record it shortly, will hopefully get some Shrimpers involved too. Here’s a little teaser:

There were some ‘lyrical improvisations’ on the day, but the full lyrics are below:

Blue Soul

The anticipations building,

As I’m walking down Fairfax Drive,

Smells coming from the Fish House,

(Queues already at the)

The Blue Voice can be heard for miles around,

Didn’t know much this old club could take,

But look at where we're going today

(Refused to die and then we came back again,)

Time to show the whole world how much we’re worth,

We’ve got blue soul,

Keep fighting on,

For solid gold,

We’ve got blue soul,

Stand up, be counted,

The blue boys are marching,

(The Shrimpers are marching)

Thought we’d lost you,

But we pulled through,

Now the North Bank’s been rocking,

The West Stand’s got its spirit back,

Watch us fly the flag for Essex,

Putting Southend back on the map,

Didn’t know much this old club could take,

They tried to go and take it away, (Refused to die and then we came back again,)

Time to show the whole world how much we’re worth,

We’ve got blue soul,

Keep fighting on,

For solid gold,

We’ve got blue soul,

Stand up, be counted,

The blue boys are marching,

(The Shrimpers are marching)

Thought we’d lost you,

But we pulled through,

They tried to keep us down,

But we came back strong,

This club means the world to me and you,

(Chorus)

Great song, wish you all the best with it.

Just FYI, that shaven-headed herbert who approached you outside the Wembley turnstiles & said he’d seen a few of your performances and wished you a great career… that was me 😂

Thanks mate, and thanks for coming over to say hello!! Throughout all the things I’ve been lucky enough to achieve over the years there’s always something special about singing at Roots Hall (or for SUFC at Wembley in this case!), so the feedback from a fellow Shrimper is always appreciated!

The song is a bit of a passion project, me and Rylee have been talking about it for a while. Football songs are always hard to write as they are divisive, but if people resonate with it and want to adopt it as their own I’ll be chuffed!
