New Pitch -really necessary ?

Tin Bath

First XI
I am I a bit mad in thinking there wasnt an awful lot wrong with our pitch at the end of the season, just seemed to have the normal wear and tear around the goalmouths. They did this last year and I remember big chunks of the pitch coming up in the first few games as the grass hadnt bedded in or I think the term is knitted together. Surely we might have the same problem come July with first games due, if we dont get the corrected growing conditions this summer.

What really surprises me is how much is this costing, guessing as much as £50k!! shouldnt that really have been used to strengthen the first team ?

I really would have thought some good general maintainence (reseeding required areas) was all that was needed

Jesus. ****ing. Christ.

You do realise that pitch maintenance has to be one of the clubs top priorities, right? Pitches get returfed in the close season, that's always been the way... The grass needs to be changed so that it'll last a whole, torturous season next term.

There are now hefty fines levied at clubs who neglect the playing surface and have to postpone games as a result. I think this is getting a bit out of hand now, questioning every club expense as to whether or not it could be used to buy players.

So you've plucked a figure from the air and taken it as fact - good work fella!!
and i would imagine you'd be the first to moan next season if the pitch was bad and we had not relaid it in the summer!

Could have had the North Bank for that money - but we know where the clubs prioritys are

They are seeding it, not turfing it. So that will cost much less.

Before Southend started mucking around with the pitch the goalmouths at the end of the season had loads more grass than they do now. Infact the wear and tear in the goalmouths starts showing after a few games. But the overall standard of the pitch seems much better than a few years ago.

This is what I love about football, how two people can look at the same thing and have completely different opinions about it.

Since I've been coming to Roots Hall our pitch has always looked brilliant in my opinion, and very few games have been called off on it, but this season I didn't think the pitch looked as good. Mainly after the snow/ice period we had around January time, obviously that doesn't help.
