New PC - Help Needed

Custard Splat

First XI
Hi All,

I'm on the look out for a new PC for home and wondered if anyone had any tips on where to purchase from. I know very little about computers however all I ever hear from computer buffs is that I should avoid PC World. Firstly...why? Also..what are the alternatives??

Any recommendations for what model to get? It will be used for basics (web, office etc) but will also get a fair bit of gaming use.

Many thanks all!!

PC World are often over priced, or have been in my experience. I'd advise looking at Dell, I've got a few computers from them, cheap and no problems.

For gaming you would need to look at slighly higher spec'd graphics, sound and processor cards to get the best out of the games you probably play.

I believe Dell, and probably others, indicate that a spec might be better for internet or gaming, etc.

If gaming is your thing for your pc you might want to consider that side of the spec. You dont need much of a spec for internet, office, etc really.

"You won't find Dell in the shops"

Yes thats right, they are often found rotting in the garage knackered.

Packard Bell are a quality brand, never had any problems with them.

Most brands use electronics from the same places, e.g Kingston memory etc, they dont all make their own, so the quality is often the same.

The best thing about buying form a shop, is if it goes wrong, just pack it up and take it back.

I bought one form PC World once. It kept randomly shutting down the first day I had it. Took it back and the bloke said "we can put it on test for a couple of days for you". I explained to him he was being ridiculous, spoke to the manager and took a new one away which lasted years with no problems.

I recently went to Comet to buy a new vacuum cleaner. They had some ridiculously cheap PC's so I bought one. Seems fine so far.

For 4 or 500 quid, you should get something really good.

Recently bought a Fujitsu laptop from Staples for £380, plus loads of other bits thrown in. Would thoroughly recommend the brand.

Bought an Fujitsu Amilo Li 2727 from Comet yesterday for my Mother in Law. She wanted a PC for emails etc. http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/508934/FUJITSU-LI-2727

The sales guy let slip that if you bought the extended warranty, they would discount the price of the PC by another £20.

Should you chose to cancel the warranty, you can do so within 45 days, BUT they do not request the £20 discount back.

So, save yourself another £20 and get the thing for £273.

Sounds cheap to me!
