New Cars

I'm in the process of looking for a new car & after some research & test drives it's come down to 2:

Mazda6 2.0 TS2 Petrol 5 dr hatchback

Ford Mondeo 2.0 Titanium Petrol 5 dr hatchback

There's not much difference in price. Both drive nicely with the Mondeo feeling & looking a touch more 'luxurious'. However, despite having the same size engines, the C02 emissions on the 6 are considerably less making it cheaper to tax. Also, the 6 is slightly cheaper to run & the residual values are about 10% better than the Mondeo. The 6, though, is slightly more expensive to insure.

What Car rates them both highly, giving the 6 4 out of 5 & the Mondeo 5 but saying there's not much to choose between them.

I was just wondering if anyone on here knew anyting about these cars & whether you have any advice on which I should go for?

Get the Mazda 6, but get the MPS (hot) version. Very well balanced and quick car ;)

As a car lover myself i'd go for the Mazda. The most up and coming car producer IMO and theie cars are becoming quite trendy. The Mondeo however is a fantastic car and is of a good quality, usual reliabilty and easy for parts in the long run. If you are a family man the Mazda has a 4 star safety rating for both Adults and children whereas the Mondeo has a 5 star rating for Adults and 4 stars for children so the Mondeo is slightly safe but 4 star overall is pretty good. As mentioned earlier my Choice would be the Mazda as i think it is better looking and a better drive.

Out of interest, what were the other cars you considered that didn't make the final two? I have to be honest, they wouldn't be the cars I'd choose, but I don't think yo can do better than a German car, but it depends on how much you have to spend.

It's the BMW everytime for me ;)

Be careful buying a Mondeo. Is it not due to be one of the cars in the higher tax bracket when the government bring out different car tax on each car

Thats the prob tho tinks....the new changes to car tax are not just due to new cars. Its for any car. Thats what has been the big problem with what car people have already bought before mr dark eyebrows has changed the rules? Thats the unfair part....

Audi for me, but only when somebody else is paying!! BMW just seem so boring & you have to pay a lot extra for a decent spec. I had a choice between & BMW & Audi & it was a no contest, as the Audi was better in every way! It all boils down to taste!

From what i have been told, the new Mondeos are absolute class so that would be my choice.

Even James Bond was driving one

Is that the 168 g/km TS2? If so then the Mazda will be £175 tax next year & the Mondeo would be £260.

I'm getting the 1.8 diesel Mondeo Titanium X next year & the car tax is only £150 , just checked & the 2.0 diesel is only £150 tax as well.

For all your research mate it's going to come down to a few factors now -

- Can you fit your pram/pushchair in the boot
- How easy can the car seat be installed
- Is it a good height to lift you baby into the car seat
- If you ever want to sit your baby in the front passenger seat, can the airbags on the passenger side be turned off (if they can't you can't put the baby seat there - it's very dangerous)

All other considerations about how the car drives etc become secondary now.

;)

Thanks for all the comments boys & girls.

As you'll see from Libertine's post, he knows why I'm getting a new car - a baby on the way, due in October, so my wife & I need something bigger than her Fiesta, so am having to think practicality as well as comfort, running costs, etc! Indeed, both cars are extremely spacious with huge boots & safe, as mentioned by shrimpled. Both also come with ISOFIX fixings for a car seat.

The Big Shrimp - I started thinking about the Xsara Picasso. I've had one before, as a company car. They're certainly spacious, quite good to drive & there's some good deals on them at the moment. However, my wife works for Ford & is entitled to dicsounts on Fords & Mazdas. I also used to have a Mazda6 as a company car & I loved it so we thought we'd look at the new 6. We then realised that the Mondeo wouldn't be much different in price so we've looked at them both.

Tinkerbell - you're quite right about the tax issue & it's something I've looked into. The Mazda has considerably less CO2 emissions than the Mondeo so, over the next 3 years, the Mazdas tax only increases by £10 but the Mondeos rises by £60 & is £40 more expensive at the moment anyway.

Having taken all this into account, plus the fact the Mazda is cheaper to run, is one of the most reliable cars on the road & its residual values are around 10% better than the Mondeo, I reckon I'm going to go for the Mazda but it's a close call!

It has to be the Ford, because I couldn't find a Mazda smiley...

Haven't they both got the same chassis and share many parts? Possibly why it's difficult to choose.

I have the perfect solution, you should have no problem getting the push chair in :-) although maybe a little pricey

Just in case any of you are interested, I have now made a final decision to go for the Mazda & I should be ordering it on Saturday, providing we can thrash out a decent price for my wife's Fiesta in part exchange!
