Failure to convert chances nearly cost us in this play-off challenging game, with the Shrimpers having about 5 real-good opportunities with which to take the lead.

Early on it could be seen that Darlo were going to play hoof ball all game, but instead away for the podgy Wingehard as opposed to the taller Armstrong. Darlo showed no great threat on the wings and their own hope in defense was the tall Clarke who won most contests in the air.

Gray had a fine effort tipped over the bar by the visiting keeper and Nicolau and Pettefer both whipped in numerous enticing crosses which just lacked the final touch to give us a goal. Lawrie didn't look as comfortable on the ball as he usually does, and Gray was doing the lion-share of the work up top. At the back Flavs was claiming crosses and making vital saves from goal-bound efforts, Che and Lewis were thwarting any possible attacks from the flanks and Barrett and Prior were winning all in the air with confidence.

At half-time I know I felt as though we should have been in-front.

The second half saw Darlo take up the tactic of wasting time, slow taking of free-kicks, petulant attempts to get further yardage along the touchline etc. etc.

Dudfield was put through on goal from a through-ball but being chased by 2 defenders and the keeper bearing down on him saw him hit his shot straight at the goalie's body.

There was a large spell of pressure from the Shrimpers which saw Darlo throw 6 behind the ball at all time to ensure that we didn't get any clear-cut opportunities.

Off went Gray to make way for Eastwood. I personally thought that it should have been Dudfield who made way for Fredy, but then again I'm not in the position to make the decision. Fredy defined confidence when he got on the ball, taking on defenders and playing the right ball to his team-mates.

A nice bit of link-up play between Benders and Fredy saw Bentley latch onto a seemingly impossible to get ball and crash his right-footed drive into the bottom-corner of the net. Cue celebrations.

However at 1-0 it didn't feel overly comfortable with Darlo now launching an aerial assault of Clarke and Armstrong on the home goal. A couple of near misses kept the score as it was.

Off went Dudfield, who looked tired, and on come Gower. Three minutes were indicated by the 4th official as Southend saw off another attack from the away team. Then Nicky broke down the left wing, played an accurate pass to Gower on the right, who found Eastwood in the middle for a turn, mis-control, and finally a left-footed goal.

2-0 the end-result.

Ratings:

Flavs - 8 - Made a number of good saves, good kicking apart from one occasion and claimed crosses.

Che - 8 - One of his best performances that I have seen. He did the simple things in defense, made good passes and linked up with Nicky on the left.
Prior - 8.5 - Won everything in the air and kept the partnership of Winjhard and Armstrong quiet. Close to MOM.
Barrett - 7.5 - An efficient performance, one of the guys who didn't stand out, but did what was asked of him.
Hunt - 8 - Right-back seems to be his best position, tough-tackling and good forward play showed his ability

Nicolau - 8 - Whipped in some great crosses that only needed a little touch to be converted, worked well for the team.
Bentley - 8 - The great 50-50 tackling that we know he can do was displayed today, a great finish for his goal.
Maher - 7/7.5 - I know I'll get flamed for this but today he was anonymous. In the second half I saw him touch the ball about 5 times, had he not been captain I'd have expected him to be subbed.
Pettefer - 8.5 - Never gives up and always looks to start an attack. Not the greatest attacking player but more than makes up for it with his determination. MOM

Gray - 8 - Great determination again, some nice link-up play but not a lot of chances to demonstrate his pace. Good contesting for headers and a great left-footed strike in the first-half.
Dudfield - 7 - First-touch looked heavy and didn't look like a real threat all day. Some nice link-up play, but should have made way earlier.

Subs:

Eastwood - 8 - Turned the game with his class and skill. Able to turn nothing situations into goals, great pass for the opener
Gower - 7 - Didn't get a great amount of time to play, but good cross for Fredy's goal.

You do realise that Grey is the coloured chap don't you?

I thought Lawrie was as good if not better than on Tuesday. He was all over the place. Had the best first touch of any of our forwards and caused Darlington's defence problems most of the game. It was Grey who looked leaden footed and off the pace!

I do indeed know the difference between the two strikers.

I guess it's just a matter of opinion.

I though Gray was the better of the strike force in the first-half.

I think we're all aware that Maher has the odd dodgy game. What we've always lacked in the past has been a team performance to carry us through anyhow or some individual brilliance from somewhere else. Looks like we may have had a bit of both today.

Seriously pleased with this result. Keeps my one-up-manship on my Macclesfield pal going!

Southend....f**k yeah!

Shows how opinions can differ I suppose.

Flahavan 7: Made a couple of smart saves and raced from his line superbly to clear up some dodgy back passes or through balls. His normally very accurate kicking seems to have been affected by his injury though. Could it possibly still be affecting him?

Hunt 7.5: Has made the right back spot his own, and thankfully it looks like we won't have to put up with nightmare that is Jupp again.

Prior 8: Now I haven't been too impressed with Prior since he's rejoined us, and in fact I've said many times that I'd rather see Edwards play, but in the last 2 games he's been outstanding. Used all his higher league nous to shackle Armstrong, Wijnhard and Hignett.

Barrett 7.5: Still continuing to show that he should and will probably be player of the season. Solid once again.

Wilson 6.5: His distribution on the whole was extremely poor and he gave the ball away far too often. Looks more solid in defence than he ever did last year though.

Pettefer 8: Worked incredibly hard and linked up well with Hunt. It still lingers in the back of the mind though that possibly a player with more attacking ability would've taken much more advantage of a mistake ridden Darlo defence.

Maher 7: Gave total effort once again, but was quieter than normal. Still dictates the way we play though.

Bentley 7.5: Better. All effort and got stuck in as usual.

Nicolau 7: Not up to the standard of Tuesday's performance, but still showed the huge amount of natural ability he has.

Gray 6.5: Unlucky with that left foot shot in the first half, but other than that I didn't think he did much. Somebody has got to tell him to get up quicker instead of sitting down whilst play goes on around him as well. Caught on his heels again far too often.

Dudfield 7.5: He's now starting to reclaim the form that he had when he first arrived. Very good once again and probably the first choice striker at the moment.

Subs:

Eastwood 7: Looked far hungrier than in recent weeks and took his goal superbly. Gray would've undoubtedly not had the piece of mind to have pulled that one off.

Gower: Did superbly to pick out Freddy for the 2nd goal.

Finally:

BlueBelles 9: For their 3 performances, I'll leave it at, bloody hell.

Pettefer MOtM? I think i must have been watching a different game. He was poor in the first half and was never getting out wide but Tilly must have had words 2nd half and as a lot of the better play came through Hunt and Petts.

Anyway, brilliant stuff today infront of a big crowd and lets hope the floaters are back Friday week!

Any chance of it coming out on DVD?
1st performance, think bright luminous tight fitting costumes, 2nd performance with Uniting Nations, think very little clothing at all, and for the half time performance, very tight fitting black hotpants.

Well it was filmed by a TV camera in front of me and the photographer did click away frantically each time they performed, so unless they were for his private viewing, you might get to see them on the official site if you're lucky.

Totally deserved to win today. I was very surprised by Darlo's negative tactics, being only 2 points behind us I thought they'd go for the win and try and jump ahead of us, but no just like most teams at Roots Hall this season they sat back and looked happy for a draw. At 1 point I thought they'd get it and it would be one of those days where we just can't score, but well done to Tilson for bringing Eastwood on. Set up the first with a lovely ball and then scored one himself with a good finish to wrap up the 3 points.

For once we had a good ref too, one of the best I've seen this season and deserves extra credit for getting rid of that moaning idiot Hodgson.

These are my ratings:

Flahavan 6 - Unusually for Flavs, he had a couple of dodgy moments in the first half that could have easily resulted in goals. Did well on crosses again though, which he's done more recently, although had very little to do in the second half.

Hunt 8 - Defended well and got forward a lot too which was nice to see. Supported Pettefer well and got plenty of crosses into the box.

Barrett 7 - Kept Wijnhard quiet and did the little defending that he had to do well.

Prior 7 - Won everything in the air and looked comfortable and confident against the dangerous trio of Armstrong, Wijnhard and Hignett.

Wilson 6 - Him and Nicky again look a good parntership on the left and Che defended well.

Pettefer 7 - Worked hard and linked up well with Hunt on the right wing, caused the Darlo defence plenty of problems with his persistence.

Maher 7 - Usual 100% effort and his set pieces and passing were good too.

BENTLEY 9 - MoTM, after a poor performance against Swindon and some quiet games before that too, he had a much improved game today. Worked hard, got stuck in and got forward well. Capped off an excellent performance with a well taken goal.

Nicolau 6 - Not as good as he has been lately, but still showed his skill on occasions.

Dudfield 7 - Another good performane although he should have scored at least once.

Gray 6 - Same as all his recent performances, worked hard and looked dangerous on occasions, but created very few chances for himself.

Eastwood 7 - Changed the game. Set up the first with a lovely through ball and scored the 2nd with a good finish.

Gray's lost a bit of confidence at the moment, i'm sure he will start scoring goals again soon. Dudders was outstanding today though, with his pace and determination to win a ball, chase a ball (that seems to be a lost cause) and non-stop battling!

Lewis Hunt again was a rock in defence.
And what a well made goal finished off superbly by Benno!

Up the blues!

Bring on the Welsh!

Spot on with the comments SB - Bentley has come in for criticism from all sides (rightly so) for some under par performances but a great show today right from the kick off.

It's hard to pick a m-o-m because this was an awesome team performance. I can't think of one player who had a bad game so instead of praising the regular suspects I think Darryl and Spinner should also get the special ORM seal of approval, both of them were terrific.

I think the title of this thread is a little bit harsh. Maybe we should have been a goal to the good by half time but we soaked up a heck of a lot of pressure in a fifteen minute period of the second half (no team dominates for 90 minutes) and didn't panic when the chances that came our way didn't go in.

Two great performances at home. Three or four difficult games to come but hey, we're not going to get relegated now so anything we achieve between now and the end of the season is a bonus for me.
