There was an article on the BBC site a month ago about the issue of city status - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-13841482. You don't need a cathedral to become a city, it's a common misconception. I can't see Southend getting it, but I hope we don't get beaten by Colchester or Chelmsford!

On my first trip to Birmingham, after being accepted to study for a Degree there, I made the mistake of asking for a town map at a kiosk in New Street station.I was told,(you need to say this in a rich Brummie accent),"Birmingham isn't a town, love.We've got a cathedral here,you know."Never forgotten it.:smile:What did I know?I come from Westcliff.Certainly no cathedrals there.
