There's lot of talk on here that we got 83 points which should/would have been enough for promotion in other years. A points tally in itself is meaningless, if you have a lot of strong teams consistently winning and picking up points you will need more than average to gain automatic promotion. Just look at League 1 where Sheff Utd missed out on the autos despite racking up 91 points. You just need to concentrate on winning your games and if you do that you will go up.

The season in (a very brief) summary:

When Luggy took over he was exactly the man we needed at that time and how he managed to persuade the caliber of players to stay/join in the summer i will never know and he deserves a medal for doing that. He assembled a squad that on paper is full of talent and promise.

By assembling these players so late on in the pre season preparation we essentially put together a "complete unknown" as far as other teams were concerned. What were our strengths? Who were our danger men? How could our weaknesses be exploited?

We utilised this advantage in the first part of the season by playing effective football for this level and picking up points on a regular basis with Ryan Hall, Moshni, and others proving to be real threats to teams. After the first 4 months (19 games) of the season we had amassed an excellent 42 points and were amongst the pace setters in the League, and even leading the way.

This for me is where the season changed. It started to become apparent to everyone that we played a direct style and looked to get the ball forward quickly, then use Ryan Hall to provide to provide pin point crosses from which we looked dangerous. This game plan was beginning to be nullified as teams marked our dangermen out of the game and expected the ball to be delivered long which they could combat by ensuring those areas of the pitch were marshaled by their players with aerial prowess. This happens at all levels of football and as with all teams it was now the time for the manager to earn his corn and make subtle changes to the style/formation of play to come up with a new tactic to keep the opposition guessing and use your lofty league position to enable you to be positive and try to win every game rather than being negative and inviting teams to come at you.

This is where PS came unstuck. We just seemed to carry on doing the same thing each week because it had worked in the past despite the fact it was clearly not working now. This is born out by the fact we managed only a further 41 points from the remaining 27 games.

I do also feel that the players did not step up to the plate at certain pivotal points in the season and to a certain extent that is out of PS's control but they looked disillusioned to me, almost as if they were looking for leadership and advice but to no avail.

In summary i believe it was our total failure to adapt tactics as he season progressed that ultimately cost us promotion and i fear the current squad will be mainly disbanded during the close season as the obvious financial constraints begin to take their toll.

On a personal note I have decided not to renew my season ticket next year after having one for 23 years and the wife is also not renewing. This is mainly due to the fact we now have a family and my time and money are better spent elsewhere. However i will pick and choose my games next year so will still hope to be at the Hall to cheer on the boys whoever is in charge. I just hope the manager and the club as a whole learn from this heartbreak and comeback hungry for success next year whoever maybe in charge or playing!

UTB

I've waited until today to post much as i was too angry last night!

I think we tried to change our style to appease the moaners.

How else do you explain the signings of Benyon, Martin, Eastwood etc?

None of them looked to fit into the style that took us to the top of the table. Why no targetman? We looked so much more effective once Mohsni pushed up front to provide the platform from which to try and play.

The style that took us to the top of the table was already failing to keep us there by January.

If it was a change in direction then Im all for it.

We certainly did look better with Mohsni up front last night, but then we have done well at home in the previous 4 games with Harris/Eastwood so shows it can be done.

If the alternative is to get a target man to hoof it to then we are back to where we were. Yes we were winning up until November playing like that but there were plenty of complaints on here even then. After November that way of playing didnt achieve anything and it was only after we did change that we got back into form again.

Very realistic and fair assessment from GNH.

Pretty much summed up the season along with ill discipline from within the camp. At times it reminds me of Harchester United (Dream Team)

That one post by GNH tells me everything I need to know. If long term, loyal fans who don't do knee jerk reactions such as him feel like that then what was served up last season must have been pretty awful.

End of an era though mate, hard to imagine you and the missus not having season tickets in your usual spot. Going to be a very diffent South Upper next time I'm at Roots Hall for a game.

Yes 83 points is exeptional but this season it wasn't enough for the autos. thats the harsh, ruthless reality of it.

Or to put it another way, only 15% of the entire division did it....

Well nearer 17% but my point was that "exceptional" sounds like once in a blue moon not something achieved by 16.7 % of the clubs in the division.

Yes, a frustrating season with a tingling climax - suddenly having a chance of automatic promotion again, only to lose it with 23 minutes of the season left. Then playing against a Crewe team who have such belief and confidence - we actually did well against them, if truth be told. I believe Crewe will have a good season in League One next year. Time's a great healer. Let's forget about Freddy's shot hitting the inside of the post and not going into the net..... and even forget those damned Aldershot floodlights. It's actually been a good season insofar as it's grabbed the attention and given us so much to talk about - no mid-table mediocrity this year. But the season had a hole in the middle when we lost form and, as GNH says, when teams worked out how to counter us. The loss of Dicko hurt us more than some pople think.

Let's hope Paul Sturrock realises that we played better in the second half of Wednesday's match because he changed the personnel and tactics, and keep to that next season. Having got rid of Swindon and Shrewsbury and with little to fear from the relegated outfits, League Two looks easier next year - although Bristol Rovers should do better, and Fleetwood will mac a difference........

Don't forget Rotherham and maybe, surely sometime Bradford must have a good season. You cant always discount the relegated sides either. Also you would think that if Luton come up they might do well then there is Oxford, Cheltenham or Crewe, Torquay and even Gillingham etc etc. I can't say that League 2 looks easier next season but lets wait and see.

It will be far far tougher next season. Fleetwood and Luton (if they win tomorrow) have money to throw about. Chesterfield won the league two years ago and finished quite well and will prove tough next season (I make them favourites). Wycombe, Bristol Rovers, Northampton (who are going to throw money at it), Rotherham, Crewe or Cheltenham, Bradford (beat us twice) - I can't see how it's easier. So many teams who miss out on the play-off's haev a season of struggle to follow (that could easily be us next season).

Thought this was interesting, so I looked into it a bit more. So in last 2 years, over the 3 divisions :

1 won the league the following season, 1 won automatic promotion, 7 got back into the play-offs, 3 finishing mid-table and 6 finishing in the bottom half (only 1 getting relegated from those 6).

Championship play-offs 2010/11
Cardiff - Play-offs again this season
Reading - Won the league this season
Forest - 19th in the league

League One play-offs 2010/11
Huddersfield - play-offs again this season
MK Dons - play-offs again this season
Bournemouth - 11th in the league

League Two play-offs 2010/11
Shrewsbury - automatic promotion this season
Accrington - 14th in the league
Torquay - play-offs again this year

Championship play-offs 2009/10
Forest - play-offs in 2010/11 (as shown above)
Cardiff - Play-offs in 2010/11 (as shown above)
Leicester - 10th in 2010/11 season

League One play-offs 2009/10
Charlton - 13th in 2010/11
Swindon - 24th & relegated in 2010/11
Huddersfield - Play-offs in 2010/11 (as shown above)

League Two play-offs 2009/10
Morecambe - 20th in 2010/11
Rotherham - 9th in 2010/11
Aldershot - 14th in 2010/11

Still a bit basic and no reason conclusion. So lets look even closer (these are from the outsite looking in, it could be different, but it's difficult to know) :

Championship play-offs 2010/11
Cardiff - Play-offs again this season [NEW MANAGER]
Reading - Won the league this season [SAME MANAGER]
Forest - 19th in the league [NEW MANAGER]

League One play-offs 2010/11
Huddersfield - play-offs again this season [SAME MANAGER (replaced in Feb 2012 but still in Play-offs)]
MK Dons - play-offs again this season [SAME MANAGER]
Bournemouth - 11th in the league [SAME MANAGER (left in March 2012 but still mid-table at that point)]

League Two play-offs 2010/11
Shrewsbury - automatic promotion this season [SAME MANAGER]
Accrington - 14th in the league [LOST 6 FIRST TEAMERS]
Torquay - play-offs again this year [NEW MANAGER (resigned after play-off defeat)]

Championship play-offs 2009/10
Forest - play-offs in 2010/11 (as shown above) [SAME MANAGER]
Cardiff - Play-offs in 2010/11 (as shown above) [SAME MANAGER]
Leicester - 10th in 2010/11 season [NEW MANAGER]

League One play-offs 2009/10
Charlton - 13th in 2010/11 [NEW MANAGER]
Swindon - 24th & relegated in 2010/11 [BIG PLAYERS SOLD]
Huddersfield - Play-offs in 2010/11 (as shown above) [SAME MANAGER]

League Two play-offs 2009/10
Morecambe - 20th in 2010/11 [SAME MANAGER]
Rotherham - 9th in 2010/11 [MANAGER SACKED PART WAY INTO NEW SEASON]
Aldershot - 14th in 2010/11 [MANAGER SACKED PART WAY INTO NEW SEASON]

Based on that I would say keeping the same manager worked 7 times out of 13, but it seems the other 6 failed when losing key players and not improving the team on the previous season. Of the new 5 managers, only 2 managed to succeed in reaching the play-offs again, but never reached the final.

Not saying that this is solid proof that keeping the same manager is a must, but more likely keeping key players will have more of an impact (possibly stating the obvious there).

So, over the last couple of years, the average position for a team losing in the League 2 playoffs is between 10th and 11th.

Please excuse me for hoping that York do it tomorrow! I love York and would be more than happy to re-visit. Luton, on the other hand, is a ****-hole of the first order!

Fleetwood will mac a difference........

I see others have missed the opportunity but I can't resist it. GNH is now picking and choosing his games now he is a family man. I won't tell any little lies but I would say don't stop though I guess you will go your own way. The chain of Mac quotes could turn into a landslide.

It's much easier to say now I'm a man of the world but there is life after Roots Hall. Yes I miss you Southend. We have our ups and downs but ultimately you make loving (you) fun.
