My take on the coming and goings...

DTS

The Business
Currently on gardening leave and our internet has packed up at home so I am reduced to a using Mrs DtS when she gets back from work so excuse me if I am a bit late with this.

Personally I cant see what all the fuss is about. Of the released five only Black was anywhere near a regular first teamer and lets be honest if we have any aspirations of going up we need better than him.

The four listed "strikers" are as far as I am concerned all dead wood. Only Hooper can be considered anything of a suprise and he with all due respects he has had chances and has failed to grab them.

Gower is a class act but as far as I can see has not actually gone anywhere yet. If he does go to Swansea then we move on. At 29 years old I fear his best years may have been seen at the Hall (Still a class act dont get me wrong).

I recall being a kid and crying when David Crown left. Dad told me we would be fine and a few weeks later we signed a little know striker called Brett Angell.

Darryl is again a good keeper but would it really break your heart to see him go elsewhere? I love Darryl but if he goes we get another keeper. I didnt personally think Collis was any worse than him but I will save that for another debate.

Finally Bailey as far as I can see has two years left and has not taken our first offer. How many of us would take the first offer from our employers? If he wants to go so be it - Lets see someone come up with some cash. If not then see you at the Hall until 2010.

Give Tilly some credit he has cleared a lot of the chaff from the club this summer and if past experience is anything to go by he wont let us down.

Have faith.

Got a good point, as much as bailey is a good player, if he dosent want to be here and wants a new challenge pointless keeping him here. Cant blame him everyone wants to play at the highest level.

Agreed. It's easy to get hysterical when players start leaving in the close season but nothing that has occurred yet is overly worrying.

The tricky thing, as it always is, is the incoming players and attracting them to the club early enough in the summer. We suffered at the beginning of last year from too many players joining late and not really knowing what our best line up was.

totally agreed, i was going to give you green, but i cant.

Good points DtS. For me, I agree with them all, but I still find it hard when we're practically 9 players down from our squad last year already and we need to bring in 6+ players that can gel and be good enough. For me, we're looking at shelling out at least 500k, up to 1m really.

I like the title, take on comings and goings, should be on the goings.
surprised on Mac going and hooper, now we are hearing francis, gower and bailey are all being hunted by clubs, would like to see some signing soon or we might have to dust down our boots

Thanks Dave, saved me having to post this. Only thing is to add that Bailey went missing in both Doncaster games, so little wonder in the lack of interest if scouts were in the stands.

It does make me laugh when a large number of people were on here a few weeks ago maoning about the quality of the squad...now we have released the 'deadwood' a large number of people are on here are moaning about their release ....

I know it's a bit of a hard situation to judge really. I'm very pleased with most of those gone or going, with the exception of Gower (if he goes) and Maher. It's just the fact that now we need to shell out money to replace them, it's a big risk.

Sorry, how is it a risk if the majority of the players released/transfer listed are acknowledged as dead wood?

all the players i expected to go have gone, although was slightly surprised hoopers on transfer list.

was shocked to see harrold is being tracked by donny. can't see that happening though!

i feel the most important signing is a keeper. flavs isn't the most commanding and let in way too many soft goals. great shot stopper but lacks on a lot more. i would really like a really commanding keeper who would knock our defence into shape as i think with clarke and barrett mulgrew and francis as a back four unit works well. all very good players but need a great keeper behind them to tell them whats what!

Apology accepted stereo.

It's a risk as we have to replace them. By no certainty can we replace them with better players, and we may end up shelling out 150k for another Foran.

We are no different to other clubs in that the best players get interest from other clubs, Man Utd might lose Ronalado if he decides he wants to play in Madrid, I reckon Lampard goes to Inter Milan and Premiership clubs rumoured to be after Kightly at Wolves, all players highly regarded by fans of those clubs and dont want to see them go but players moving is a fact of life and life goes on after they move.

Guess what I am trying to say here is whats happening at Roots Hall is happening at pretty much 91 other league clubs and even the big boys have to face facts they can lose their best players if that player wants a new challenge. Its only just turned June, end of July I am sure there will be lots of excitement on these boards about watching new players that have signed for Southend....have faith ladies and gentlemen

Spot on. I can't see what the fuss is about either. I would have been far more concerned if he'd kept the "dead wood" and not left room for bringing in better players. Only thing is, he's decimated the reserve side. How will we make a meaningful double assault on the Pontin's League and Essex Senior Cup ?
