Music recommendations

I'm getting fed up with buying albums and then not liking them.

On my possible purchase list at the mo are new albums from Coldcut, Jim Noir, Jason Mraz and Cat Power (already been discussed a bit on this board).

Can anyone recommend these, or if not what's rocking your world at the mo?

Bought Sigur Ros the other day, bit too depressing for me.

If anyone wants to take it off my hands they can have it for a fiver.

I'm in the same position, i keep buying new albums that are just older bands album fillers.
I tend to go retro and buy old classics in these bleak times.

...but I'll take any reccomendations as I've a healthy credit with those Russian Mp3 sites..............

A few of my faves of the year so far...

My Latest Novel Wolves (Bella Union)
Scottish indie rock - anthemic but not in an overblown/pompous way, more like Arcade Fire

Citay Citay (Important)
Largely instrumental and acoustic based - sounds a lot like Led Zeppelin III

Jel Soft Money (Anticon)
Hip-hop for white suburban indie kids who can't stand the likes of 50 Cent, Kanye West etc.

Acid Casuals Omni (Placid Casual)
Side project from Super Furry Animals keyboard player - organic, poppy, proggy, electronic and very nice

Flaming Lips At War With the Mystics (Warner)
Carrying on the sound of the previous 2 albums, a bit more P-funky and commercial though

Espers Espers II (Drag City)
Haunting, acoustic, male/female vocals, lovely

Adem Love and Other Planets (Domino)
Modern folk genius from ex-Fridge member, this is everything David Gray wishes he was (but alas, he's a talentless f%&kwit)

Eagles of Death Metal Death by Sexy (Downtown Records)
Don't be put off by the name, this is Josh Homme from QotSA in his other band - just great catchy rock music

Loose Fur Born Again in the USA (Drag City)
Like EoDM, this is just fantastic modern rock music, features Jim O'Rourke (Beth Orton producer, sometime member of Sonic Youth)

Euros Childs Chops (Wichita)
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci frontman's first solo album - incredible lo-fi sunshine pop, if you like Super Furry Animals you'll love this

Islands Return to the Sea (Rough Trade)
Canadian indie pop mash-up that's impossible to pin down - features 2 ex-members of The Unicorns, 2 of Arcade Fire, 1 of A Silver Mt Zion/Esmerine - the first totally essential album of 2006

Panic! at the Disco. The Go! Team, Fall out Boy. The Shout out louds, if you like that sort of thing!

Not really in your area of music by my two favs at the moment and please excuse spelling are

Common - Be - Thoughtful Hip-Hop

Arman Van Helden - Nympho - Dance...

Both are superb and always on in DtS Towers.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - totally amazing, gets better with every listen.
The Secret Machines - Ten Silver Drops, only briefly listened to it but every bit as good as Now Here is Nowhere

The Mrs heartily recommends (dons Tin Hat here for potential abuse) the new Embrace album that came out on Monday, not listened to it yet but supposedly is a sound all of their own & not Oasis or Coldplay by numbers!

Thanks for the tips guys I will check some of these out next time in HMV on Oxford Street.

Might give Embrace a wide berth though...a poor man's Coldplay is not on my wishlist...

Agree with Secret Machines and Clap Your Hands..
Morning Runner have a great debut album, also new Delays album is superb. Can also reccommend Nightmare of You, The Organ, Embrace and the new Graham Coxon album.

Have to disagree with you on Delays. I wouldn't wipe my arse with their inlay. Or Embrace. Who sadly have been chosen to record the World Cup song. I'm sure it'll be a belter.
Anyway, new album that will be out soon...
Iain Archer. Have heard it and is tres bon. He used to be in Snow Patrol (check for his name in the inlay of "Final Straw" - he co-wrote "Run") but writes much more interesting solo stuff. Not sure when it's coming out but he also has an album out from last year called "Flood the Tanks" which is also very good.
Also from last year, though I never reccomended it, is RedJetson - New General Catalogue. Quite superb album. It's on DrownedInSound recordings. Both very different.
Sorry to the fella that didn't like Sigur Ros. They're one of only 2 bands ever to have made me cry and that album is quite exceptional.

Well for one, if you got one of the corners of the inlay it would bloody hurt...

Agree with you about Graham Coxons latest effort however disagree with Morning Runner. Far too similar to Coldplay for my liking but thats only my opinion.

Bit mainstream and I'm sure loads have it already but the Kooks album is superb IMO. Got it about 3 months ago and still loving it. Apart from that, another relatively golden oldie that ive wiped the dust off to enjoy again is Loius XIV.

You really thought about that one...
Yes, maybe a bit too much

Anyway, I haven't been listening to a lot of new stuff lately. In fact, the last few of albums on the CD player at home have been:

The Smiths - Meat Is Murder
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Uplift Mofo Party Plan
British Sea Power - The Decline Of...
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
Supergrass - Life on Other Planets
Pixies - Surfer Rosa

I have only bought one CD this year.

Under Attack, the Alarm. New songs from what is basically a new band (Only Mike Peters remains from the Original line up) but still keeping the "traditional" Alarm/Peters sound.

However, if you don't know the band from years gone by it could very easily be dismissed as there are a lot of new bands (and U2) which sound similar...
But I like it. Unfortunately, the only tour date this year in London is the day we are in Swansea.

Fantastic Album. If you buy and like this, i suggest getting John Legends album as well.
Cheers ESB I had thought about this but is he not more of a ballards type bloke....Heard some of his stuff and had mixed feelings.

Just got the album by the Kooks. First time i've played an album twice, back to back for ages, not sure if that's a reccomendation and I guess being as it came out in Jan/feb its old hat to you trend setters, but for us ale drinkers who take our time I did enjoy it, bit like an unplugged Artics.

Haven't heard the RedJetson album but thought the single "This, everyday, for the rest of your life" was a corker.

Although there is no album yet I would recommend Jamie T as one to watch... Salvador is my single of the year so far!
