Who gives a feck? He just was, the Mondays were great...end of story! Good music can't be analyzed like that, especially a band like the Mondays.

C'mon Ron Manager.
As a fan you should be able to quantify this better than that.

Class!

Bez was important because he epitomised what the Happy Mondays were about - a carefree, f*ck you attitude. Bez reinforced the punk belief that ANYONE could be in a band - even if the only thing you could play were maracas. Bez stood for EVERYONE who couldn't play but still dreamed of being in a band. He was the Mick Quinn of music, everyone saw Bez and thought "That could be me". Bez helped people to dream.

(That was a party political broadcast on behalf of the Madchester Rave On Party)

Bez was important sure but not as important as Shaun in my opinion. I like to think that the Mondays would have made it without Bez. The most undervalued Monday was Mark Day (aka Cow) who was an awesome guitarist. This is especially evident on their masterpiece Bummed. Martin Hannett's production on this and the Rave On ep were also spot on, capturing for me, the definitive Mondays sound.

Not really - I don't see music as something to be intellectually analysed, especially a band like Happy Mondays who didn't have an intellectual bone in their body (thank goodness).

Just read 'Freaky Dancing' (Bez's autobiography) for a hilarious account of that time. Full of drug stories and tales of mishaps and misbehaving.

The Mondays were about getting off your face and dancing around like a lunatic, if Bez contributed anything it was that he encapsulated exactly that. But that's all too serious, 'Your Twistin My Melons Man!'

Funny you should say that i should read his autobography, i'm doing just that at present!
Actually quite surprised about his european travels and general start in life. I'm not a fan of the style it's written in but it summs him up i suppose.
Reading this book actaully prompted my post as his part appeared based on serendipity and the fact he was totally hardcore on the substance front.
An o.k read enough for me to go out and re-buy their first album today.
