Mobile Phones

Should Pupils be Allowed Phones in School?

Part of my project for school is conducting a survey accessing views of different age groups on a specific topic.

My topic is “Should Pupils be Allowed to use Mobile Phones in School?”

Please discuss your views here :)

As long as people aren't using their phones during lessons then I don't see why not. It's useful if people need to get hold of their parents without having to go through the school office first.

I dont think they should have a mobily at school, but then what happens if they urgently need to phone up mum/dad straight after school?

One of our policies is that if you get your phone (and also Ipod, PSP's (yes students get those out in lessons as well) and anything else similar) in class, we take them off them and they have to get someone from home to pick it up. Kids at my place are also banned from using them during break time.

With Hazey's answer, our school charge 10p to use the phone to a landline, but if the students want to contact their mum/dad on their mobily, they have to fork out 20p, which in my opinion is wrong, because the kids will then bring in mobilys to use because they dont want to pay the school money to use the phone for a minute or so.

Some teachers have different policys towards MP3 players, some have no problem with people listening to them during class if they work quietly.

I dont mind them listening to them, as long as it aint blasting out so everyone can hear it, but the school policy is no Ipod's at all. It's mainly the GCSE students who get these out in classes.

Seriously? It's been a while (too long :( ) since I was at school but that absolutely beggars belief.

Yeah it was mainly the GCSE classes at our school too, especially people doing art exams or mocks which were more than a few hours long.

Some teachers even put CD's on during lessons playing quietly in the background whilst the students are working. The kids seem to respond better to this rather than just silence. I've ever done this though, but if it does work in lesson, than why not?

The problem in our classes with the radio was it sort of sent the class into a frenzy of all joining in with songs and messing about.

I have 2 Year 10 boys who love singing songs from Hairspray and Brittania High. Weird thing is, is that they dont listen to it during lessons.

The camera phone is a bully's dream come true, for use against pupils and teachers alike. I see no reason why anybody needs a phone at school anyway.

The number of times I've been phoned because they urgently need something they've forgotten, or have decided to stay for an after school club, or go to a friend's house I definately see the benefits of them having them at school. As a mother it's reassuring to know they've got them.

However, my daughter sometimes manages to text me during lessons and when I asked how she does this, says some teachers don't mind. I find that unbelievable.

Mobiles yes, absolutely, but not during lessons. As for music, I don't see the need for that in school time at all, unless it's actually part of a music or drama lesson.

As for camera phones, the use of them in acts of bullying is not good and a teacher at my school had a video of him on youtube, amusing to some but certainly not for him.
