Mayor of Calais

Call me weird, but I'm proud that we're seen as a country that offers opportunities for foreign people. Seeing as immigrants can't wait to get from France and mainland Europe to England says it all.

It's not the case that you can walk into this country and start claiming benefits, and that in the vast majority doesn't happen - immigrants are a net economic contributor and should be welcomed.

"Opportunities"??? Substitute the word "benefits" and you have the true story. She has it spot on for me. Whatever you think, we are still seen as an easy touch for those wanting supposedly better lives.

Immigrants are a net contributor to the economy. Any benefits paid are offset by the tax they pay. In fact, immigrants are less likely to claim benefits than Brits, and so they're funding us!

This isn't to say there aren't infrastructure issues and labour market issues

Alas #Barnabluegetsitwrongagain

UMP is not FN why make things up just to dig out other posters.

UMP are as right-wing as you can get without actually voting FN.

I notice that she has a Polish mother and an Armenian father. With that sort of background, I'd have thought she'd be a bit more sympathetic to immigration.

I also notice she was only elected due to a second round stitch up by the right-wing parties (including the FN).

Christ you're naive. We certainly have a large number of immigrant doctors, nurses etc and others contributing a lot to this country. I bet not many if any come via the Calais camps. TBH if they arrive in my experience they feel they've won the lottery and they have. I do feel sorry for them as their own countries are basket cases (one reason they avoid France and Spain like the plague) but that does not mean we should be responsible for them. They are not EU residents. However we are still one of the most tolerant and free society in the world in spite of what the Guardian might say and that is why they want to come here.

What is your experience exactly?

I'll tell you my experience, I used to do European recovery and had to come through Calais. I had to run a gauntlet of illegals trying to jump on the truck and attempt to get into the vehicle on the back. I had to physically throw one of the back and on another occasion had to start swinging a breaker bar around to keep these people at bay. They are a menace and would have cost both me and my employer £2000 each if they had been found on board. They, I might add,are released to carry on as normal and try exactly the same thing the next day.

They are not economic migrants, they are illegal immigrants in France before they ever get into the UK, France should be dealing with this, not us but I see exactly where the Mayor of Calais is coming from.

By the way, it's Labour who allow ex BNP members to join and represent them ,not UKIP.

How does that work once they reach retirement age?

I take it you're talking about non-EU, asylum seekers here, rather than economic migrants,as such?

In which case, I'd certainly agree that the French Government should be doing more to deal with the problem, along with the Mayor of Calais.

As an immigrant myself, I cannot condemn those who wish to seek new opportunities in a new nation. As an immigrant who has worked, paid taxes and never claimed a dime of welfare or any other state assistance, I feel I can condemn those who come to our shores looking for benefits, free healthcare and multicultural laissez faire. I also love my adopted home, almost as much as I love England. I don't speak ill of the United States or encourage it to have all the same laws and traditions that I left behind (proper chip shops would be welcomed however). I am happy to assimilate and be a law abiding taxpayer, whilst still retaining my love for the land in which I was raised.

I wouldn't pass Norman Tebbit's test if England drew the USA in the World Cup again, but I did support the US after England had been knocked out. I don't think I'm setting a particularly high standard for potential immigrants to the US and the UK, and I fail to see why we owe the world's flotsam and jetsam a free lunch.

Of course non EU migrants, as you delight in telling us all, there is free movement in Europe for EU citizens.
