Marky Gower...

scrounger

Duncan Goodhew
I noticed another thread was referring to the Goat being a contender for player of the month, which I very much agree. I would like to take time out to congratulate Gower for his recent perfomances.

After he returned from that injury, he was brought on a sub a few times and looked slow, fat and very unhelpful in changing the game when we needed it. I'm not suggesting he should have been automatically match fit, but his footballing skills in general plumetted, which is not the result of injury, but instead a sign of lack of confidence. There was one particular match where he was dreadful and I remember thinking he would soon be on his way out.

However, he has totally turned it around. He has slimmed down, and even though he is still not quite the same player he was (where he cuts inside from the wing and unleashes a monstrous shot that bounces in off the bar - Brizzle Rovers one of many examples) he is no doubtedly an important member of the team. His consistent run in the team surely indicates this. Any thoughts?

His sheer determination, along with faith from Tilly, shows that getting an injury in a consistently winning team does not necessarily mean you will sit on the bench for the remainder of the season. I have taken into account injuries, but every club has the same problems, and now we are nearly at full-strength again I am interested to see how Gower performs for these last few fixtures.

Gower has been our player of 2006 so far. Apart from Freddy, he's the most talented footballer we've got and when he's on form he's a major asset for us.

Marky G is my favourite player to watch. I thought second half against Col******r he was superb, some of the balls he was pinging about were of Premier$hite quality, he has the cleverest footballing brain and best vision out of the whole squad, just needs to add a few more goals. Defensively he has improved massively, I remember the LDV final against Wrexham where he barely put a foot in, now he tracks back and helps out Che a lot. With Bradbury doing a similar job on the right, we have a much more solid look about us than when Cole or Lawson play on the wing. I cant see us conceding too many goals till the end of the season.

Agreed, been great after Christmas and is finally putting in some quality performances.

You can tell he is better as there isnt a huge groan after everytime he gets the ball now!

What used to frustrate me the most was when he was on the left wing he wouldn't cut inside, would take the defender on, attempting to cross on his weaker left foot, with the end result being a sliced cross (not troubling the keeper). The fans behind the goal had to be on their guard alot. Thank God he does that alot less frequently.

I hoped you touched wood after sayign that comment. And was holding a four leaf clover and had a lucky rabbits foot round your neck!

It's no concicidence that Gower's best form this season has been at the same time as the team's best form - along with Maher, he's the other player who seems to inspire the whole team when he's at his best.

I got frustrated with him last season because when the ball was crossed form the other side, he never seemed to be making the effort to get in the box - unlike Bentley does.
However, this year most of our good stuff has come from the side he is playing on. He is one of the 4 or 5 that could (oops I nearly said will) - do well in the Championship next season.

Thought you meant Broughton there for a moment.

Ever since we dropped that donkey we've gone from strength to strength. If for nothing else Webby is legend for dropping him for Swansea (A) in the LDV, from bottom of the table we went onto reach the LDV final, and from that (hopefully) successive promotions.

I'll still maintain that apart from his inability to realise that Drewe was the biggest donkey going, Wignall did a good job. He cleared out a hell of a lot of crap, and got winners in. The team he assembled lacked only a decent forward who offered something in the final third, and a centre back who could jump and run. As soon as Broughton and Warren were dropped we flew.

Wasn't Gower another Wignall signing?

I've just started a new thread to discuss.
