Mark Cooper, manager of Blue Square Premier club Kettering Town, has been named as the firm favourite to become neighbouring Northampton Town's new boss.
Cooper watched his side beat Gateshead 4-0 on Tuesday night to leave them second in the table.
But he has already been installed as the most likely candidate for the Cobblers job by several bookmakers.
And comments made by Sixfields` chairman David Cardoza suggest Cooper could be just the man to replace Stuart Gray who was sacked on Tuesday – even if he does not have much first-hand knowledge of the Kettering man's achievements.
Cardoza said: "I'm looking for somebody who knows how to work in the lower leagues – somebody who can work to a lower-league budget.
"Ideally we'd like somebody who understands non-League football as well.
"There are lots of players with potential who are playing at that level who we would like to bring to the club to develop them and turn them into better players."
"It could be someone young or someone experienced.
"Nothing is set at the moment - we just want to see what is out there.
"I don't know too much about Mark Cooper. It's a name that has been mentioned to me by quite a few people in the past day or so but he's under contract at Kettering as far as I know."
Cooper, meanwhile, played things with a typically straight bat. "It's not right for me to talk about a job so soon after another manager has been sacked," he said.
"It's never a nice situation to see someone lose their job and it wouldn't be right to comment.
"What I will say is it is always nice to be linked to a League club because it means I must be doing my job well."
Cooper is also the 4/1 second favourite for the vacant manager's job at Lincoln City behind former Cambridge United boss Gary Brabin
