Ref Watch "Magic of the Cup" Refwatch ......... Eastleigh (A)

Mick

Life President
We have played Eastleigh 7 times, all in the League. We’ve come out on top 4 times, lost 2 and drawn just the one. We’ve scored in every game against them and have won the last three without conceding. But this is the Cup …..

Saturday’s match is due to be refereed by James Durkin, son of Paul Durkin who stepped down from Premier League duties to referee that re-arranged end of season 2000/01 match against Mansfield after the tragic death of Mike North, a friend of his.

Durkin jnr, from Portland, Dorset is in his sixth season at this level, his earlier seasons having been dogged by injuries which seem to be behind him. There is an element of coincidence about both his previous Southend matches. The first was also at Eastleigh in 2021/22. A 1-1 draw which was a very stop/start affair, not necessarily his fault. Cautions to Hobson, Husin and Cardwell plus two of theirs.

His second and most recent was just a couple of days under a year ago when he took charge of last season’s first hurdle Cup exit at Yeovil, when a depleted squad had plenty of the ball but absolutely no cutting edge losing 2-0. Mooney got our only yellow to their three.

This season his 4 games have produced 13 yellows and no red as yet. Three games were Football League matches with just one National League so far.

Eastleigh have won both of their last two matches with this referee and both by 5 goals to 2 !

Assistants are Alex Bradley from Woodingdean near Brighton and Michael Hayden from Epsom. Standing by as Fourth Official will be Peter Lowe, a fund manager working in private equity funds from Portsmouth.
