Longest Serving Managers

MrB

Life President
Tilly is now in the Top 10, pretty impressive in the current climate of trigger happy chairman.

1. Sir Alex Ferguson, appointed Nov 1986, duration 21 seasons, Manchester United
2. Graham Turner, appointed Aug 1995, duration 12 seasons, Hereford Town
3. Arsene Wenger, appointed Sep 1996, duration 11 seasons, Arsenal
4. John Coleman, appointed Aug 1999, duration 8 seasons, Accrington Stanley
5. Steve Bruce, appointed Dec 2001, duration 6 seasons, Birmingham City
6. David Moyes, appointed Mar 2002, duration 5 seasons, Everton
7. Martin Ling, appointed Sep 2003, duration 4 seasons, Leyton Orient
8. Steve Coppell, appointed Oct 2003, duration 4 seasons, Reading
9. John Ward, appointed Nov 2003, duration 4 seasons, Cheltenham Town
10. Steve Tilson, appointed Nov 2003, duration 4 seasons, Southend United

Indeed - well done Steve and well done SUFC for having the faith in his abilities to turn the club round rather than taking the easy option and firing him in the dark days of last season.

Turner I think is chairman as well , so likely to be around a lot longer !!!

Almost 4 years gets you in the top ten long serving managers!!!

This is a fickle game now I guess. Well done Ron for picking a good 'un and sticking to his guns.

If you look and make a simple analysis, all of these clubs have been more sucessfull than a simple average.Must say something!.I know those dissenters against Tilson have quietened down after the nice Gills result, but really!; C'mon its quite obvious what sticking with the right person can achieve.Same as in any walk of life ...People are always entitled to an opinion but lets see an end to this knee jerk reaction kind of support!

Excellent well done Tilly!! Might catch up with some of the others, he is very young too which helps if he stays at the club (Which I hope he does for a very long time).

It's a sad commentary on the pecarious nature of being a football manager. Interestingly, it is apparently the case (read in an article but I can't substantiate it) that replacing the manager in the Premiership leads to the same outcome for the club in most cases- they do no better under the new manager and are often relegated anyway (if that is where they were heading at the time of the sacking). What the sacking seems to achieve is the illusion that the chairman is doing something positive to improve things, it seems not to change footballing fortunes. More about business than football perhaps. Stability seems the best option and I hope Tilly stays at SUFC for a long while.

Not only is that true of the Prem, it's true of all football. Changing managers may have a positive impact for a few games, but after that not a lot changes. It's not even good business since you have to pay off the old manager and also pay the new one, which is therefore a waste of money.

The slightly strange thing about that list is that 50% of the managers are Premiership managers.

I've argued that stability at a club is the way to go, and Southend are getting that under Tilson, and well done to Ron Martin for sticking by him.

How exactly will he "catch up with some of the others"? Does time go faster for Tilly?

;)

This says far more about the Chairmen of the Football League than it does about the success of Steve Tilson, although it certainly is nice for us.

Maybe he has one of these:
