Local Mancs

Played five-a-side last night and watched Derby v Man Yoo in the bar afterwards.

After the end of the game some bloke in a Man Yoo shirt came in from his five-a-side match and ask the score.

'1-0 to Derby' I said.

'It's pathetic' he replied.

To which I said, 'I know, especially when there's a local team just two minutes up the road'.

He didn't get it.

haha very good....that does really tick me off. espically when 'supporters' of so called top four teams slate southend THEIR LOCAL SIDE!!

Fair play to locals supporting Man U. It must be easy to be a glory-hunter and support your local team. They've taken the tough option.

literally most of my mates are either mancs or liverpool fans. they have never been to either places and never seen a match yet cannot believe i support little old southend.

i tell em that they are a joke and not real football fans but they cannot understand. there are so many of these people around, when man u play the pubs are full of em.

Personally I dont have a problem with people who support Southend but also follow a bigger club. However I find it ridiculous that people support these big teams and never see them play but yet take no interest in their local side.
You normally find these people are arrogant, ignorant and insecure. Their ego couldn't take admitting that they support a non successful team. I feel sorry for them though as even if their team wins the champions league, they will feel as happy as I did at 4.50 on Saturday for example!

Got talking to a Man U supporter at work. He asked if we fancied our chances against Chelsea at home. So I said why not we beat you 2 years ago. To which the response, was yeah but that was only the Carling Cup and we played our reserves and infact it was 4 years ago. I had to point out that it was 2006, a reserve team that had Rooney, Ronaldo, O'Shea etc and this Carling Cup which they were playing Derby in that night

i think if you live in a certain area, for example manchester, then you are entitled to still follow them if you move area. If however you live in a certain area eg. southend, you have no right to follow a team 300 miles away. Why support a team based on glory & success? Your local team is important. Why support a tv team? Real football is not just about glory, its about live football, played in your community. Its a social ocassion, a chance to meet with friends. Its joy, desperation and commitment. Cant get that from a tele

A friend of mine used to think he was a West Ham fan. I think he got the hump when I pointed out I had seen West Ham play more times that he had, because I had seen them play Southend...twice!

Completely agree with that, but I need to claim an exemption for Lucky Derek, because

1. The nearest "local" team (Ross County) is 70 miles away.

2. He lives in a foreign country so he is allowed Southend as his "English" team

3. Without Lucky Derek at the games, we wouldn't have won the playoff final in extra time, beaten Preston with two last minute goals, beaten Carlisle with a last minute goal, drawn with Chelsea with a last minute goal.

He isn't called Lucky Derek for nothing!

I cant agree with that, yes it is annoying when people support teams because of their success but to say they have no right is just wrong. Let people support who they want to support, we know that there is no better feeling than seeing the team you love winning and they in all honesty will never feel that.

Have to agree

No right to support whoever they want?

To be fair to them, and I broached this subject with a corringham based Manure fan, when he first chose a team to support - bearing in mind his Dad didnt like football - he chose Man U. This probably happened from an early age, 6-8 yrs old, and as he pointed out, when you are that age, as far as you are aware, Manchester United might play in the next town. Once you have made your allegiance, its very hard to change, so maybe there is some justification for supporting whoever you want to.

It's a product of the way that the game is marketed these days by Sky, and lapped up by the other major media outlets. Just look at the way we've been patronised and at times practically ignored with regards to our tie with Chelsea. It's very convenient to Sky to be able to focus on four clubs so much, and for a growing percentage of their viewers to be quite happy about it.

Manchester United stand head and shoulders above every other club in the country when it comes to actively encouraging that kind of thing. Whatever people think of Chelsea and the Abramovich millions, Manure will always be the scum who did the most to ruin top level English football to me.

Doesn't bother me at all, in fact It just makes me feel superior to them. Can't really explain why and it proabably isn't logical, but its how I feel.

A lot of my friends from Wickford watch West Ham and Arsenal on a very regular basis. Their parents are from London and their dads took them when they were young so it makes sense for them to follow. I love the fact that supporting my local team means the train journey is 15 mins, I can always get a ticket , the ticket is cheap (realatively speaking in comparison) and the national press isn't slagging us off every time something goes wrong.

think your missing the point. there talking about people supporting a team up north i.e liverpool, man u yet have never been there or seen them play. yet look dwn all supporters such as ourselves who support our smaller local team.

tbh they will never experience the joy and suffering we have and will do whilst supporting southend. more fall them if you ask me.
