Echo News Liverpool trip a boost for Shrimpers boss Maher

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher has been boosted by spending time with Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Maher was invited to Merseyside by his former Shrimpers team-mate Mark Gower who now works as a scout at Anfield.

And Maher found the trip hugely beneficial.

“Mark Gower works for Liverpool and invited me up to have a look around and see how they work behind the scenes which was brilliant,” said Maher.

“I’m a fan anyway so it was nice and from a working point of view to see the environment they work in and to see everything that goes on behind the scenes was brilliant as well.

“For a top level club, to see how friendly they are and how basic they do things was interesting.

“They don’t overcomplicate it at all and there’s an open door policy once you’re in the front door and it was really good to see.”

Maher has guided Blues to a win against Halifax Town and a draw with Rochdale since making the trip which he thoroughly enjoyed.

“I spoke to one or two people behind the scenes about how they work, the processes they use and how it all filters through to the manager which was brilliant,” said Maher.

“They’re really down to earth and really, really good at their jobs too.”
