Anyone know of any software that will allow live streaming video over the net on a website?

No, I'm not going to show my weener off to the world you'll be glad to hear, its a question a client has asked us to look at.

Must be something available, if you check out this site www.nakedworldofkennygoodbourn.co.uk then you'll get the idea.

(in all seriousness, I would like a geniune answer!)

First off what format do you want to stream? mms, rtsp or http?

For the record - mms is windows protocol and rtsp is the real player protocol.

What type of content do you want to stream, will it be a live data feed like a T.V or V.O.D - video on demand?

Hi Bob,

I guess its easier to stick to the Windows protocol, save any more confusion having to download Real Player (*yak*).

The feed will be live from a webcam. The tricky bit is (and I personally dont think it can happen) - is the guy wants to broadcast to a maximum of 4 other people simultaniously, whilst each person can see and hear the other.

Not only technically difficult, but extremely sapping on bandwidth.

Basically, he is an English teacher and wants to teach online with 4 students at any time. I guess the best way will be to broadcast his media to the students and have a java chat window for communication?!

Thanks for the reply anyway Bob - what do you know about it?

Cheers,Paul

Paul,

Surely video conferencing via your PC is the best way to go? I've used it at HMCE and it was fairly simple. Not sure of the cost implications.

Dave

Yea, thats what I thought Dave - but as we do webdesign, he would like it on the web, with a secure log-in etc. Would kind of make the website redundant if the lessons dont take place online, though I suppose we could still do the appointments & database for him...

What would you use for video conferencing?

To be honest streaming video technology is not the best solution for this. Whereas video conferencing definitely is. If however he still persist on video streaming then he will need to get himself a windows media server which will allow this to happen but beware WMS is extremely flaky and will need to restaring frequently but it is the easiest one to get going. Also I have confirmed with my multimedia bods here at work that the webcam source should not be an issue.

As one of my many talents I am responsible for our Cisco Content Delivery Network which includes video streaming as we need to have something more robust then WMS.
