1-0 up from a great Bradbury goal it looked as if the Tilson has really put a squad together rather than a team and I was enjoying watching the rain falling through the flloodlights. It seemed as if League One teams (I thought Orient were ****e - Thornton excepted) were going to be easy meat for the likes of JCR and Gower and our quality would always tell -
But football not quite like that - however poor they look these guys are out there to compete and if not buried they will bite you and bite back they did as they got back into the game. You could see Moussa's passing ability but he was missing the drive to pick it up and push on. Bailey looked good enough to be playing at this level but has an odd unbalanced look as if hes either carrying an injury or has had his cruciate done.
When they equalised and began to attack I knew we were going to lose. When the penalty was given I was completely unsurprised and unshocked - it was about what I expected. Thats the way things go for Southend. When Collis saved it I had to sit down and try to take it in.
Last season I was two rows from the front against Barnsley and had watched Mr. Bradbury fight for every ball and eventually put a centre half out cold and he never once eased up on his teammates always demanding the max -
With him on the pitch last night theres another asset out there - grit and determination and massive knowledge and know how of the games dark arts in tight spaces - and he showed superb balance and upper body strength in holding off the opposition. Still a major assett to SUFC.
So Adam got impatient and put C Town to bed and the best moment was JCR trying to get the penalty off Lee Bradbury - and what a relief we've got a strong looking squad -
Collis - saved a last minute penalty - nothing more can be said -
Gilbert - fast enough, good enough - but got to get rid of the errors.
Wilson - can survive at this level
Clarke and Barrett - shouldn't be troubled at this level
Bailey - can play at this level
Moussa - has vision and ability but not yet the steel -
Gower - should get ten goals easily - can take league One teams apart -
JCR - needs some-one to show for him afetr he has put all the defenders on their a rse -
Bradbury - a privelege to watch the man play last night -
Hooper - gets in good places but at this level you got to have the killer touch -
Charlie Mac - we'll see if he can get loose and finish - obviously keen to take his opportunity - a couple of times lacking in nouse -
Black - still might need time to get up to full speed and to see how the team plays but has clear ability - the full backs nightmare, Gower or JCR goes off after 70 mins. and little Tommy Black gets after you.
did notice the referee towards the end of the game - as he intended -
enjoyed the East - and how much the accoustic are with the ground half empty -
Man City away please -
