Ok, so I asked this question on twitter...Does anyone know who scored the last goal infront of the old North Bank? (ie. with Southend fans IN the north bank)

Did the 2 tiered South Stand open for the start of the 94-95 season?

If so then the last home game was a 4-3 win v Derby in the 93-94 season, in which Ansah scored 2 and Sussex & Otto each scored one. But does anyone know the times of these goals and which way we were shooting each half?

Remember that Derby game well. Plenty of action on and off the pitch!!

Can't remember if that was the last game though. It may well have been.

I recall watching Middlesbro' from the east stand having decided the view from the South lower was crap, and that was an early season fixture in 94/95 so that sounds about right.

Not sure but vs Derby we was shooting towards the north in the second half, I know that because when we celebrated on the pitch I was the first one to reach Paul Sansome at the South end.

I was then greeted by thousands of Derby fans and got chased all the way to BHS in town lol

Are you being serious, the north bank was full of the caravan club that day. The north bank was seated well before our run ins with canvey.

i believe its a joke, as aside from about 150 Marsh Rats directly behind the goal the rest of the stand was Southend

That game against derby was a classic. Otto's hand stand infront of the travelling support after scoring did the atmosphere the world of good lol

That was one double naughty game

Was in the North stand when Derby came onto the pitch, is was helirious watching a see of southend surporters running towards the north east exit, could not really make out what was going untill i saw a few derby actually climbing over the riot fence to the north stand, i was still in the stand when derby came in and mixed it up.

Could not work out how they managed to get from the south to the north, as anyone in the north stand at the time can remeber, right beside the derby fans in the south were about, i would say 50 or 60 coppers there, all in hi viz, but they did not move. Anyway it made for an exciting day out, then we were turfed out of the the following season and put in the south stand, and from then on, it all went down hill. Yes i think it was derby, that was the last goal scored.

Right, looking through some match programmes from 1994 confirms that 1994-95 was the season the new South Stand opened. The first home game of the season was a First Round, First Leg Coca-Cola Cup tie against Watford. I think that, like Boney, I watched that match from the South Lower and wasn't too impressed with the view. I have got the idea in my head that the top tier wasn't open for that match, but I could be wrong. It was officially opened and named the Frank Walton Stand on the day of the home game against Oldham Athletic, on Saturday 3 September 1994. According to the match programme on that day, "A unique portrait of Frank standing on the old South Bank, in which he appears twice, is to be incorporated into the fabric of the Stand for all time". So, is it still there?

So, yes this would mean that the last match played with the North Bank as the home end would have been Derby County at the end of the previous season. Although we won that match 4-3, we scored all four of our goals in the first half. Although I have no idea which way we were kicking, these two separate recollections suggest that those goals would have been scored at the South Bank end:

In which case, the answer to your question who scored the last goal in front of the North Bank as the home end would be Derby County's Tommy Johnson.

If you're looking for the last Southend player who scored in front of the North Bank, well again I don't know which way we were kicking, but it could be Joanthan Hunt (50th minute against Crystal Palace 06.04.94) or Ricky Otto (56th minute against Notts County 30.03.94), or if it's neither of those, then it will be either Peter Beadle (14th minute) or Andy Sussex (55th minute) in the 2-1 win against Portsmouth on 12 March 1994.
