I am looking at getting a Laptop due to a personal project i am working on, it would need an internet connectivity, Powerpoint, Word and Excel. It needs to be portable. Games and DVD's arent a priority but would be a nice added bonus. I dont want to spend over £350 if i can help it. Ideas, recommendations please

As always your help is greatly appreciated

Cheers
Andy

I would have a look at anything Dell.

I've not had experience of the Vostro itself, but Dell have never let me down.

Vary in screen size, from 13-17 inch, depending on how often you'll transport it.

Cheapest is at £249.

Dell Vostro.

And no, I'm not a Dell Salesperson :whistling:

Bought myself the Toshiba Satellite L300 from Argos for under £300. Toshiba seem to have good support, comes with the trial version of MS Office including Power Point, and has a DVD writer. Decent basic machine at a good price (don't touch Acer, if you get a bad one their support is dire).

i would reccommend an Acer laptop of some sort. not the biggest name in the computer world but you get alot more for your money.

The bits inside probably come from the same places anyway.

In my experience its best to buy from a shop - PC World, Comey, Tescos.

If it goes wrong you just take it back. Tescos change almost anything without asking whats wrong.

Sorry for the delay in answering - I don't find it too heavy, but you would need to heft one for yourself really.

Acer - if you get a decent one it's a lot of bang for your buck. If you get a bad one the support is TERRIBLE and that's why I recommend you stay clear of them.

Me and my brother both have Acer laptops (he's had his for over 2 years now) and we've not had any problems with them...

Unless you absolutely must have MS Word, Excel and powerpoint I would give them a miss, save yourself a bit of cash and use open office which is free.

The word processing and spreadsheet applications give you an option to save in Word and excel format so MS office users can open them. I haven't used the open office analogue of Powerpoint so I can't comment on that.

Other SZ members may be able to comment further.

I'm looking at getting a new one too. All I really need it for is web browsing, my new iPod and to run DreamWeaver in order to do updates for the SZ front page. Not interested in watching videos online or needing any office stuff like Powerpoint, Word, etc.

What sort of money do you think I should be looking to spend?

Open Office Powerpoint is fine, and I use Open Office all the time.
