Laptop Help

I am in the process of buying a new laptop in the same price bracket, any advice from anyone welcome here. Have found a Sony Vaio for £500. sounds like a bloody good deal. I'm not much of a computer man but i find the higher the numbers the better they are.

How good or bad it is depends on what you intend using it for, for 3D gaming it's rubbish (anything released in the last few years anyhow), unless you play at the lowest of the low settings then you may get respectable fps but it'll most likely be a slide show. It'll be fine for 2D stuff and will run emulators no problem if you fancy some old school gaming ala ScummVM/MAME/Zsnes etc that sort of thing.

By the looks of it playing DVDs will be no problem though so it should be fine for watching a few films on, the laptop comes with a good CPU so it should have plenty of power. Here's a review of the graphics card running some older 3D games if you'd like a point of reference -->

As Mr. Plow said, the graphics card isn't much cop if you plan on playing elaborate 3D computer games.

Everything else looks good and a great deal for £499. The processor at 1.86 is a good clock speed, and it's a "dual-core", which makes it particularly efficient at running two quite large programmes at the same time (AOL and FM2007 for example!), and this coupled with the fact that it has 2GB of RAM means that it should be impressively quick. So at £499, i'd recommend it, but consider replacing the graphics card or getting a similar laptop with a better graphics card if you want to do some serious gaming. Watching DVDs and stuff would be no problem either.

Whoever recommended the Sony Vaio laptop is right. I have it and it's brilliant. Should be, and is worth, £650+, but it's on offer at PC World for £499, and it's an absolute STEAL.

I've seen the Sony Vaio on offer, but have been attracted by the extra ram on the Dell. I only intend on playing FM on my laptop so power is more important than graphics, so it being able to play full screen videos is ideal. The Dell looks more suited to what I need, and has more ram than the Sony, so will probably plump for that.

I just got a laptop with similar spec (dual core, 2gig ram, 120 gig hd) but with some dedicated graphics memory for £500- Aspire 5633wlmi from www.simplyacer.com . less of a big brand than sony or dell but it seems well put together and the customer service for the sellers was very good, might be worth a look.
