Lakedistrict - recommendations please

After hijacking another thread thought Id ask for recommendations here.

5 of us are having a lads break in the Lake District for 4 days and am trying to determine where to go when we get there.

Campsite near windermere is booked and after watching Wainright Walks think Haystacks will be one of the fells we climb.

David Essex has recommended Skiddaw so Ill take a look at that one as well.

Any other recommendations ?

Requirements are based on a general level of unfitness (although doing weekly walks now to improve) and a case of vertigo so no perilous climbs unfortunately.

Does need to be a decent challenge with walks up to 5 hours or so I reckon.

If I struggled to get to the top and then found 5 year olds in flip flops Id be a bit embarrassed :)

So whats a recommended walk, what kind of distance is it, how long does it take and can it be done in poor weather.

Also, if weather is bad any decent walks to do that wouldnt be restricted by low cloud etc ?

Would definitely recommend Keswick as a base... I've done both Helvellyn and Skiddaw, would recommend either.

I'm pretty sure we did this route for Helvellyn (we didn't do the striding edge route cos the weather wasn't great)

Not sure what route we took for Skiddaw as I was quite young... that website is good though for walking routes

Whimp!

A good one may be Green and Great Gable. If you do Green Gable first and are feeling knackered then you can just finish there, but I would recommend making the effort to climb Great Gable aswell. There's a bit of scramling needed, but I don't remember it being too bad in terms of vertigo...

I believe this is the route me and the wife took:-

Great Gable

That route brings you back along a river, which takes in a pretty impressive water fall. But, be warned, the path isn't that well defined, and completely disappears at times. It's well worth the effort though.
