Southend captain Kevin Maher has been offered a new deal to stay at Roots Hall, but has conceded he is keen to test himself at a higher level.
The 27-year-old midfielder has been a virtual ever-present for The Shrimpers this term enjoying an impressive campaign which has seen him named the club's Player of the Season.
The former Tottenham star - who arrived at the Essex-based club in 1998 - is out of contract this summer and is believed to be a target for a number of clubs, although his agent Saif Rubie insisted he was happy at Southend.
"Kevin wants to play at the highest level possible and ideally that would be with Southend," Rubie stated.
"He has been one of the most consistent performers at this level for some time and is keen to challenge himself.
"There is obviously interest in him because of his situation, and while he is happy to stay he wants to test himself."
Meanwhile, midfielder Carl Pettefer has signed a new two-year contract with the Division Three outfit.
The 23-year-old - currently out of action with an ankle injury - inked the deal at Saturday's 2-1 home defeat by Torquay, and admitted he was delighted to be staying at Roots Hall.
"I'm really happy to have signed a contract here," he told the club's official website.
"I think we have a good side taking shape and it's great to be a part of that set-up."
