Jools Holland

Myself and the missus went to see Jools Holland at the Cliffs Pavilion last night; what a fantastic evening! The man is in Southend for two nights and I really do recommend seeing if you can get down tonight for the second night for the man puts on a storming show! We had the delicious Sam Brown, the larger-than-life Ruby Turner, but I was particularly thrilled to see the legendary Rico Rodriguez on the trombone, the grandfather of ska, who brought the house down leading a great version of "Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)" which had in the past been performed by the likes of Prince Buster and The Specials. (Rico toured with the Specials in 1981). Absolutely brilliant!

Go see the show! (And if it's sold out tonight, he's in Brentwood on the 27th; I'm going again!!)

Whilst there is no doubt that Jools Holland is a talented musician am I alone in thinking he is insufferably smug?

It does annoy me that he milks the cash cow time and time again by releasing the same big band cr*p.

That said, Later with Jools Holland is a great music program. It's just a shame that he has to join in on his piano. No matter who he plays with it always sounds the same (to me at least).

I was kinda in the same train of thought before last night. But the show completely changed my view. He certainly didn't come across a "smug" ...
