John Elliott RIP

It is with deep regret that I inform you of the sad passing of John, who lost his battle with lung cancer on Monday night

Glasgow born and bred, he moved to Southend in his early teens and soon became an avid fan of the Blues.

Many of the Pak and those that hitch-hiked to away games in the late 60’s will remember him, as well as those on the local soccer scene (the likes of Young Blues, Bell Sports and Old Southendians were all represented by this combative forward).

John became a respected figure in the Insurance sector of the City of London and spent a lot of time visiting his clients in the States. Indeed, he insured Southend United at a time when many would not touch it with a barge pole. I believe that Messrs Jobson and Adams asked him more than once to join the board, but John was far too canny to get involved.

A shareholder and season ticket holder, it’s still hard to imagine him not taking his usual place in the East Greens next season.

John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

God bless you mate.

I received the sad news the other evening by way of John's son Scott.
A true Shrimper and a pleasure to know.
I recall many a healthy bar stool debate between John and Charlie Benson about all things Southend United, for me John will be one of those Shrimper characters who's memory live on with you. Sincere condolences to John's wife Bev, Scott and all family and friends, RIP fella.

I spent many hours with John before I moved to Maldon, did a few golf trips to Spain, went to away games as part of the Rouge Club & for a period met up regularly on a Friday evening often in the Far Post where we would listen to John Adams spout on. We did learn quite a lot on those evenings but not much was repeatable.

On one occasion I drove John, who had never learnt to drive, to Barnsley in a Mercedes Coupe that he'd reposessed from an employee at his firm. We belted up the motorway & arrived well in advance of the 10:30am kick off for the supporters team who were coming by minbus. Firstly we went to the club to ask if we could swop the Director's box tickets John Adams has supplied for terrace ones, which they thought very odd, & then sought out a local hostelry for an enormous fat boys. All went well until we came back to the club where Charlie B informed John that he was playing as they were short & I would have to referee (badly as usual!!) as Barnsley didn't have one.

I think John lasted 10 minutes doing his Franco Baressi impression in the Catenaccio trap defensive system before chundering & I noticed that depite protestations Barnsley actually had 3 subs!! Not sure I've ever felt worse for about a week.

We all had some great days & truly sad news.
RIP Grey John 😢😢

Remember that Barnsley trip well Hooly. They were desperate for revenge after we had beaten them in the National Supporters Cup final at Kidderminster the year before. We, on the other end, fell out the back of the mini-bus just before KO - how shall we say?......unprepared. In fact, despite his short time on the pitch, John was our best player.

RIP fellow Shrimper. another sad loss to the Shrimpers stand in the sky.
