James Walker Today

I'd disagree that he was poor. He does hold onto the ball too long on occasions, but upto now his touch has been very good. He hit the bar with a lovely chip and created another couple of chances, he's not the finished article for sure, but he has something and with with T & B's tutelage he'll be a good player in time. Unfortunately i cannot defend the touch in the last minute.

his 'chip that hit the bar' was actually a cross

Unfortunately I feel Walker had a lot of pressure put on him when he originally signed for the club and uncle Ron declared that "a star was born". This was swiftly followed by Gower declaring that he is better than Freddy!!! Such comments should only be made after we have witnessed him make the kind of performances that merits them in a blues shirt!!!

We have seen moments of brilliance and theres no doubt he has the ability... but if we are honest he has yet to live up to the hype! We need to forget what was said on his arrival and remember in truth we have signed what everyone seems to like to call a "rough diamond". At times he takes too many touches and is too slow to release the ball, at other times he just seems to put his head down and ignore those around him. But I'm confident if we do sign him the T&B can transform into the player Ron has told us about. He clearly has something about him - at times he has petrified opposition defences already - and you can see from his effort that he is happy to be here! If we can just forget whats been said and give the lad a chance I have no doubt he will come good. The boo boys aren't on his back yet... lets give him support... lets give him a song!!!

:)

I really rate Walker and think he will do well here. His first touch isn't always brilliant, but to me he seems strong, has good feet, decent pace and works extremely hard.

Unfortunately his touch let him down towards the end on saturday, but I thought he had an okay game apart from that. He will be a very good player for us, I'm confident of that.

Wayne Grey was better than Walker imo. He had pace to burn and scored the odd goal.... he wasn't deemed good enough for the Championship!

Wasnt deemed good enough for league one bearing in mind he spent most of the the season on the bench.

Walker has a lot to prove, his first touch does seem to be a bit Wayne Grayish at times but he looks far better on the ball.

He isnt the finished article though and deserves time to settle and 3 goals in 11 games isnt a bad start.

Barnard actually missed a sitter as well and I didnt think he had played well on Saturday but shows what a difference a goal makes to peoples perception...

Walker was poor staurday but was superb up at Crewe.

The jury is still out in my book but his record is decent and I think for a 20 year old his body strenght is superb.

Spoke to 3 walsall fans couple of weeks back , in the evening after the game. I ,naturally, asked them what they thought of our team and who they were impressed by. All 3 quickly responded 'that Walker is class' or something like that.

My Brighton mates all said the same.

Wayne Gray was fast but wasn't good enough for the CCC and the terms offered to him reflected the fact that he'd be a bench warmer if he stayed.

Those of us lucky enough to see James Walker up at Crewe and, to a large degree, down at Swindon will have seen that he is excellent at holding the ball up and laying the ball off into the path of runners from midfield or to the feet of whoever his striking partner is. I've no doubt he will have the occassional game where things don't come off for him, he'll also have the odd game where every ball he plays leads to a goal or a pretty good effort.

btw: Can we find out if he likes being called Jim or Jimmy, or if we have to call him James. Then we can give him his own chant and he'll instantly transform into a fans' favourite.

Cue a chorus of "Jimmy, Jimmy" if that is the preferred choice!

Given his uncanny resemblance to Eddie Murphy, I'd like to see us adopt the theme tune to Beverly Hills Cop, craftily adding the line "James Walker" to the end.

My mate Dave reckons James is the new Wayne Gray.

 So does that make him the new, new Pele?????????? :tumbleweed:

Good to see that a scrape goat has been found to explain the reason why we only drew. Good job we didn't lose or else there would be open mutiny.

Am I the only one who is getting totally ****ed off with this rubbish about scapegoats. If a player has a poor game should we not have the right to express our opinion on a fans forum to that effect. I do not believe this is fickle or "scapegoatism" especially when there has been no long term abuse as others have suffered on this forum

But it's true, every time we don't win there'll be a raft of threads slagging off certain players. People need to realise that we aren't going to win every game, and also that we are on a run of 12 games unbeaten. I don't think a draw at home against Northampton is that bad a result. They came with an effective game plan, and it worked.

Oh, and one other thing, where are all the threads slating Barrett for missing his header? 6 yards out, no-one near him, the keeper shouldn't have had a prayer, but everyone seems to have conveniently forgotten that in the rush to slate a 20yo for mis-controlling a ball.

Its a case of being poor losers (or er drawers from Saturday) .

Ok Walker and Black didnt have the best of games but why cant we just accept that and look forward to the next game.

I guarantee if we had won this thread wouldnt exist, and that is fickle.

By having 3 page long threads slating a player for one bad performance is way of the top, no player in League one is perfect and some will have quieter games.

I actually thought Walker whilst not having a great game wasnt awful anyway..

It's not about slagging off the players. I am a season ticket holder , so i pay there wages all season, not just the occasional saturday. I am there every week. Walker is not the finished article by any means and i have not stated or screamed to have him benched. I even think he would be a good investment, so we should buy him.

Saturday was more about the fact that he was playing badly and lets face it he was. He should have been replaced by Revell and not pushed to the wing where IMO Black was doing a good job annoying their defenders.

I pay these guys wages, as do alot of people on this forum, i can have my say if i want. I will still be at every home game singing and cheering them on.

The Blues to me is about supporting my local club, but i can still be objective!!

I also think the polarisation of views tends to make problems look worse than they are and means that players are described in much stronger terms.

Just to check, was that post saying that critics should be able to have their say without critics of critics being given the same right? Frankly, if someone comes on here saying that it's time for Gower to be sold or that we should be playing some youth teamer in place of one of our more experienced players, I'm going to voice a counter-argument.

My problem is that if the team has a bad game so-called supporters decide to pick on one player to pin the entire team's problems on that one player.

I believe it is down to an inability to accept that on occasions the team isn't good enough, so they think that if only one player was subbed the team would become unbeatable. Actually, unbeatable is probably the wrong word, because we are unbeaten in 12, although that still isn't enough for some. It is the inability to accept that the team is not perfect.

I don't have a problem with people saying someone was off their game. I have a problem with people saying Walker is crap because he miscontrolled one pass. Had he scored with that later cross/shot that hit the bar, no-one would have cared about that miss, but because he made one mistake people ignore the rest of his contribution, both to the game (although he was generally average) and our long unbeaten run.

The fact is on Saturday a number of players weren't at the level they had been for the previous three appearances. That is not surprising as no-one is perfect and we'd strung together three of the best consecutive performances that I can recall. A dip sometime from that level was inevitable. The trouble is the next time Walker miscontrols the ball, the idiots will no doubt be on his back again, saying he couldn't trap a bag of cement, completely ignoring all the evidence to suggest otherwise, where his close control sees him hold off one, sometimes two defenders.
