It's Official - Dean Ashton Retires

Shame. He's a very nice chap indeed, not at all like your typical footballer. Still, I'm a bit dismayed to hear all these voices calling it a 'tragedy' and claiming that football is 'a cruel game'. A S4E quite rightly says, he's been paid an absolute fortune while he's been stuck on the sidelines and he'll bow out with quite a hefty insurance cheque as well.

It's less of a shame for him and more of a shame for England. He was the goal-scoring targetman we needed.

"Ashton himself, who is just 26, will also receive a pay-off from West Ham of about a year’s salary, thought to be £3 million."

nice!

I'd be amazed if he does sue little SWP. From what I heard, from a very good source indeed, Ashton tripped over him!

I thought it was the FA he was sueing?

If he does, maybe they'd think twice in the future about calling up injury prone West Ham players... Yes, I'm looking at you Upson.

Real shame. Saw him playing when he was at Crewe, you could tell even then he was destined for big things and I'm sure that had he not got injured he would be now playing for one of the so called 'Big Four' and partnering Rooney up front for England.

When he broke into the England team he was strongly linked with Man UTD, looked like his career was really about to take off and i have no doubt he would have made the England World Cup squad.

Real shame, but I truly hope he doesnt sue little SWP, doesn't strike me as a malicious player - especially as they were training in the same England team when the injury happened.

I apparnetly because he came back from the original injury he hasn't got a leg to stand on, excuse the pun!

I feel for the bloke, I really do. Having your career ended at 26 is terrible.

The thing I love though is how now he is retired he all of a sudden becomes a footballing god. He was a decent player, don't get me wrong, but he wouldn't have played for a top four side or got many caps for England.

Heskey is much better as the "big man" up top.
