Echo News 'It's going to be great' - Powell previews Blues' FA Cup clash with Charlton

CHRIS Powell thinks Southend United’s forthcoming clash with Charlton Athletic has the makings of an exciting FA Cup clash.

The Shrimpers will host the Addicks at Roots Hall in a first round tie at the start of November.

And Powell, who is regarded as a legend at both clubs, expects an entertaining tussle.

“I think it’s going to be great,” said Powell who has played for and managed both Southend and Charlton.

“I’m sure the ground will be packed, the usual Southend support and Charlton will fill out the away end behind the goal too.

“It will be interesting and hopefully it might be a live game on TV as well.

“I’ll definitely take an interest and if fixtures allow I’ll try get down for the game too.”

Powell now works as assistant manager at Sheffield Wednesday.

But the 55-year-old jokingly predicted Southend would face Charlton as he watched the draw take place.

“I’m always interested in the draw even though I’m not involved until the third round,” explained Powell.

“I always look out for clubs I’ve played for, managed and worked at and there’s no bigger than Southend and Charlton for me in that regard.

“Southend came out and I thought it was great they got a home draw.

Then I realised Charlton were still in it and I said go on then, make it Charlton.

“Sure enough it was and it’s a good tie for Southend and the fans.”

However, Powell feels Charlton - who sit eighth in League One - may view it slightly differently.

“It’s quite a tricky one for Charlton and knowing Nathan (Jones) like I do I think he would’ve preferred a home draw,” said Powell.

“Nathan obviously played for Southend and there’s always been links between the two clubs.

“Both teams got morale boosting wins recently too and this is definitely a positive draw for Southend.

“I think they maybe need a bit of a lift in many ways and maybe it might come in the cup this year.

“But I do hope the win at Eastleigh is a real springboard for Southend this season.”
