Echo News "It will be a special day" - Blues consortium and fans can't wait for kick off

SOUTHEND United will start the new National League season with a “special day” in the club’s history tomorrow.

Blues will line up at a packed Roots Hall, against York City, in the first game since the consortium headed up by Justin Rees completed their takeover.

And the group of businessmen - who will be at the game - cannot wait for the campaign to get underway
“Like all Southend fans, COSU (custodians of Southend United) are really looking forward to the season opener,” said the consortium in a statement to the Echo.

“After our incredible journey to get to this point, it will be a special day for us all.

“Since the takeover completed, the response from fans and the wider community has been incredible and we thank everyone for welcoming us into our new role.

“On the pitch, it will be a tough game against a good side and we wish Kev (Maher) and the boys all the best, 3pm Saturday can’t come soon enough.”

Blues’ future was seriously in doubt before the consortium came to the rescue, pumping close to £4million into the National League club before officially taking control in mid-July.

Since then, more than 4,000 supporters have snapped up season cards and more than 7,000 fans have bought tickets for tomorrow’s season opener.

Passionate Blues fan Jamie Liddle will be among those in attendance.

And he is excited to see how well the Shrimpers will do this season.

“It’s just so exciting and refreshing to be starting a season thinking about just football,” said Liddle.

“In the past it’s been embargoes, points deductions, winding up petitions and it’s just such a nice feeling that’s all in the past now.

“We’re all so grateful to the consortium and what they’ve done and we can’t wait to see what happens this season now.”

And those sentiments were echoed by another Shrimpers supporter, Finlay White.

“This is the most excited I think I’ve been in ages about a Southend season starting,” he said.

“I think we feared Saturday was a day which might never come in the club’s history so it will mean a lot.

“It’s brilliant to see what’s happening at the club now, thanks to the consortium, and hopefully we can get the three points to make the day even more memorable.”
