That was the cry from someone behind me after Grimsby fluffed another chance, and how true it was. Pathetic sums up last nights performance from us. It showed that Tilly is kidding himself if he thinks he doesn't need to strengthen certain areas to get us promoted. Hunt got showed up completely that he's not a midfielder, Pettefer gave us nothing going forward again, whilst the full backs were abysmal yet again. We made a very poor team look alright last night, and if it wasn't for their finishing looking like the calibre of our early season finishing, we'd have been hammered. Nobody seemed as if they wanted to be there, the crowd were subdued, and it just seemed as if everyone would've rather been in the warm and preferred to have been able to have the game on the Saturday afternoon instead of another evening one.

My ratings for what it's worth:

Griemink 7.5: Still not comfortable with him but I'll accept when players I'm not keen on have good games and that was the best I've seen him play. For once he looked confident. Didn't make any outstanding stops and it wasn't what you'd call a masterclass in goalkeeping, as it was the sort of game where chances were missed rather than saved by either keeper.

Jupp 5: Poor again. The moment when he and Che were left back on the halfway line and he managed to lob it over Che's head and put us in the mire was ridiculous. Has to be replaced. Is he really leaving, or was it just a malicious rumour?

Prior 6: Doesn't concentrate enough for me, lets the ball bounce far too often and had another one of those games where he never really looked comfortable.

Barrett 7: The best of the backline yet again. Had no chance of getting out of the way of Gray's backpass. Fully committed to the cause unlike a lot of the others.

Wilson 5: Shabby yet again, and it's time for Nicky to get another chance. Mad bad passes, could barely head the ball and his anticipation was woeful.

Pettefer 5: What does he have to do to get dropped!? He runs around a lot but that's all he does. Lawson could've done that and probably more besides. Needs to be replaced by someone who actually has some attacking prowess.

Hunt 4.5: Absolutely appalling. When he and Pettefer play in midfield together, we lack so much cutting edge. It's frightening that someone playing there has so little ability when it comes to shooting or any other attribute needed in the final third. Whenever it drops to him on the edge of the box you just know nothing's going to happen. Dwelt on the ball far to often and didn't look like he could be bothered at times.

Bentley 6.5: Was pretty anonymous really. Missed three really good chances but missed having Maher next to him, especially with the way he knew how Hunt was playing. Never gave up though.

Gower 7: Huffed and puffed but always tried to beat his man once too often. Grimsby knew of his threat and doubled up on him everytime he got the ball. Still vital to any hope of us getting anything from the game though.

Eastwood 6: Was pretty quiet again. Why does he want to come deep all the time!? He very rarely darts into the box as he did when he first arrived and was all too often trotting around 30 yards out when Gray had the ball at the byline. Scored a goal out of nothing, although my first impression was that the keeper should have saved it. Has anyone seen it on tv yet?

Gray 7.5: Never stopped running, always putting the defenders under pressure. Never got any kind of service from an inept midfield though.

Subs:

Bramble 6: Should've been brought on much, much earlier. Yet again Tilly didn't use his subs right when we were struggling. Tes gave us a bit more impetus, but why was he put on the left wing for the last 5 minutes?

I suppose the bright spot is that even though we were a shambles, we didn't lose. Grimsby are the sort of teams we need to beat if we want to stay in the top 7 though, especially at home.

The bright spot is that we wont have a week (well 3 days) of anti-Maher and Bart posts ...

Where's that new poster who keeps demanding for Maher's head because he's useless and we're all blind? <!--emo&???-->

We missed Maher massively last night.

Bit harsh I think Andy. He made a couple of excellent saves in the second including one in the dying minutes when one of their forwards was clear through

That one at the death was strange, as from where I was in the greens, it didn't look like he touched it and everyone was bemused that it was a corner.

It might of sounded a little harsh, although it wasn't meant to be. It was just that it wasn't a game that I looked back on and thought, "thank God for our keeper today." It was more along the lines of "thank God we played a poor team who couldn't finish."

Can't disagree there, they were a bit like Northampton with their finishing, thank goodness.

Andy, rumour has it that Tilson does indeed want to strengthen 2 "key areas" which I interprete as left and right back. Finding the right men is of course the difficult part.

From my vantage point in the front row of the South Upper I had a good view of both Fredy's goal and Bart's save.
Fredy's shot was into the corner of the goal and despite the keeper's dive he missed the ball by about a foot. Perfectly placed shot.
Bart's save was low to his left and he turned a certain goal into a corner. He deserves a lot of credit for that save .

Although I agree that we were poor last night, I actually think Grimsby looked a decent side. Not pretty but very well organised, hard working and very dangerous on the break. I think they'll be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

As for us, well, the only positive I think of from last night (apart from Bart's immense performance) was that we played so ineptly yet still got a point. This time last year we'd have been absolutely thrashed.

I feel the ratings you gave were quite odd

Hunt 4.5, HOW?!?!? he could not have been worse, he gets a 2 from me, a yellow card would have got him 1, and being dismissed 0.

Eastwood 6, HUH!?!? The reason he came deep mate, was because he was not recieving service, and had to go and get the ball himself. SUPERB GOAL

Gray 7.5, Not in my book, the backpass should never have needed to happen, a couple of poor touches, yes he worked hard, buit i dont see how he can get 1.5 more than Fredy

All opinions though (i agree with the rest)

When Eastwood finally started to go forward and Gray dropped back a bit he scored so it's obvious that we need Freddy to go forward alot more. Also I've seen our goal and it was a good strike and I'm not sure from where the keeper was standing that he could've saved it.

It was a big **** up yes, but it was on target until a bit of bad luck when it hit Barret's leg.

Fully agree, the fact Eastwood is comfortable coming deep is unusual for a natural goalscorer but definitely a useful asset when creativity is low (also allows the midfielders to get forward and support him and Gray).

A couple of thoughts....
A lot of plyers were well below par last night (Jupp, Wilson, Prior, Hunt, Petts and Bentley spring to mind). Perhaps with the number of players out through injury/Ban/loan (why not recall Kights as we are now so short in midfield?) that a few of them felt they were in the comfort-zone and it showed in their performance?

Re subs: I agree, Tilly left it too late to make a change, not for the first time. I feel he has to learn that subs are not a last-resort and that he should in-effect be planning to use 12 or 13 players over the 90mins?

Last point - after Fredy scored he was holding his ankle for about 10 mins, looked like he had a knock and was stuggling to shake it off. If he wasn't fit he should have been taken off and replaced by Dudfield.

Yep, he did take a knock but I can understand why he was left on as he's always likely to pop up with a goal. However, Dudfield's fresh legs may well have been a better option.

It's very strange ... WHERE have they all gone?!
