Istanbul

Petition against Champions League Final venue

Sounds like a good argument but then again I have an irrational hatred against Turkey

Don't think it would be a problem unless one either of these scenarios came to pass

1.) A Turkish team qualifies for the CL final. Their rabid nationalism would get the better of them.

2.) An English team qualifies for the CL final. Plenty of recent history there, that would definitely get ugly.

I liked the Turks on the one occasion I visited their country. Very hospitable people but they don't tolerate anyone taking the **** and they're very nationalistic. Scenarios 1 & 2 would be very unfortunate. Still I expect if it was scenario 2 we'd get all the blame.

BTW the city is called Constantinople, it's just called Istanbul by the people who illegally occupied it 500 years ago.
One day they'll be driven out and the Byzantine empire will be restored.

Thanks for the geography & history lesson!
Always remember that They Might Be Giants song too.

I just remember the fallout England got from the Euro qualifier at The Stadium of Light.

The trouble was minute in reality, most of it was totally hyped by the media & in fact most of the 80 or arrests were at either Newcastle or Durham stations for people with banning orders. What minor trouble there was near the ground was fuelled by a bus load of kebab shop workers & other various Turkish ex-pats winding up a number of English fans.

As you say, if say Chelsea did get to the final & it all kicked off, no questions it would be the English at fault.

Rant over

But the Byzantine empire was basically the leftover of the eastern Roman Empire, and when Constantinople was taken over the scholars and scientists etc, left for Rome and such was the beginning of the renaissance, so if they hadn't taken it over, the world would be a different place.

That is a fair Point. To think Turkey and the Ottaman Empire could have been the true centre of Art and culture??
