Is there a way out?

lee_sufc

Coach
I highly doubt there is but I thought it would be worth asking:

Basically, we rent an LCD with Box Clever and have done for the past few years. However, we were recently given a new TV as a present and would like to cancel the agreement with Box Clever to save money.

I just called to ask them and was told that because we had recently upgraded the TV with them, we signed a new 18 month agreement and wouldn't be able to cancel it until November (or pay a £150+ charge)

Is there anything I can do to get out of this or do I just have to stick with it until the agreement ends??

I doubt there is way out mate if you have signed the agreement apart from paying the 150 ..Sorry ..:(

But some know better on here.

Get you Mrs to ring them, and say that you no longer want it etc. Be polite about it, and explain that they have a choice, they can either have you as very unhappy customers, and you can tell all and sundry how unhappy you are, or they can rip the contract up, rent the TV to somebody else, and have happy customers.

I say get you Mrs to do it, because as I'm sure you will agree, women have a way of getting things their own way. Even on the phone.

Is there any of your mates out there who would want to rent a LCD tv until november at the least , give them a discounted price so out of the whole situation you maybe out of pocket by say 40 quid , if not then maybe do like the above posts said and blag it ;)

Contracts are contracts. Would be quite surprised if they retracted it. It's exactly same as phone contracts, generally in most cases if you upgrade then you actively take out another 12 months on top. I did a couple of times and always tried breaking the contract and never being able to!

Alternatively, just cancel the direct debit ( if thats how your paying) What are they most likely to do?- take the product away. Simple. Chances of them even thinking of taking you to court- slim to none IMO.

Do you think this would work with getting out of my phone contract?
Vodafone = robbing scumbag b*stards who mis-sell their products!

Vodafone are the worst company for mobilys. Suprised you even went with them in the first place, Rich.

Are you still with them, or changed over to another network for the time being whilst trying to sort this mess out with them?

No idea.

I did this with two insurance policies I had. I could'nt be arsed sorting all the paperwork out so I shredded the lot, and cancelled the direc debits. Lo and behold, a few letter saying we seem to have a problem with your payment, and then they got the hint and sent me one saying as of such and such you have not been covered due to non payment and thats it.

I know one of my mates was renting a TV, and when he no longer needed it, he was in a similar position. If you stop payment, the first thing they are going to do is get the good back, to prevent you from using it. Provided you don't prevent them from getting it back, I reckon youd be hard pushed to find a company thats overly bothered.

Still with them until my £145 credit winds down, then I want to tell them to stick it (although I am now contracted until August 2008) :(

Nasty!! Couldnt you go to the Citizen's Advice Bureau and see what they suggest? Maybe they might help you.

Chadded mate - Shut up! All your advice in this thread has been very naive, truly awful, and to be honest potentially very dangerous if taken!

If you cancel your direct debit, then although they might not want the court costs take you to court to sue you for 100 quid etc, however it could seriously screw up your credit rating.

If you have defaults/very low credit ratings then it could potentially be very difficult to get a mortgage/credit card/phone contract etc. Anything whereby you need to be loaned credit. Definitely definitely not advisable.

I would assume this is written into the rental contract too should you default payment too.

See the above post GlasgowSUFC. Do not take any notice of Chadded as he has absolutely no idea what he is talking about on this one! :thump:

It is, I had a rental agreement with Box Clever which I terminated and they collected the equipment accordingly. Despite the fact that my paynents were up to date, and also the equipment was something like 3 years old, they still tried to get me to pay a fee for terminating the contract & collecting the equipment from me. After a few phone calls & letters it was agreed that I didn't owe them a penny, but while this was going on I was getting threatening calls & letters from a bailiff.
