Interesting story in the Echo for all you Flavs bashers

Who was the Numpty manager who didn't renew Daryl's contract & released him in the 2003/4 season in favour of signing Carl Emberson.

I believe it was everyone's favourite clown, Steve Wignall.
Says it all about his ability as a manager really.

The reason was because Flavs' behaviour at a sponsors evening. Although according to an interview with Flavs a few years later he said he was turning into an alcoholic following the death of his brother, and it was that that led to his poor behaviour.

We can only speculate on whether or not Wignall was aware of Flavs' personal issues...

Probably not unless he read the newspapers, watched TV or owned a radio.

It was Mark Prudhoe not Emberson - Emberson put in some good displays for us and some poor ones too and he was one of Webby's buys I beleive?

Prudhoe was and will always be Wignall's achilles he was at the end of his career and should have hung his gloves up when he left Bradford's( sub bench. Also don't forget Wignall got rid of Flavs because Rhys Evans was going to sign for us but he chose Swindon instead - A bit of luck for us really coz Swindon went down and we went to CCC.

Southend swoop on Emberson

Emberson worked with Wignall at Colchester
Southend boss Steve Wignall has continued his summer strengthening with the signing of former Luton Town goalkeeper Carl Emberson.
Emberson has agreed a two-year deal at Roots Hall following his departure from Kenilworth Road.

The 29-year-old, who started his career at Millwall, previously played under Wignall at Colchester.

"I know Carl from old, he did a great job for me at Colchester and since then he has been very successful at Luton," Wignall told the club's official website.

"He's a good competent keeper at a good age and he's a good character to have around as well.

"He'll be excellent to have in the dressing room."

Meanwhile, Wignall is to give a trial to former Aston Villa striker Michael Husbands when pre-season training starts.

Embo was signed by Wignall!!!!!!!

They were Col Ewe buddies!! Dont blame Webby for this!!

Impressive stats for Flavs

Was it not Stuart Robson who recommended Flav's release?

Anyway, I'd still prefer to have Collis in goal.

I'd like us to get a better 'keeper than the both of them next season, moving both Flaps & Collis on and having Clarke Masters as back-up.

That is surprisingly impressive.

Not surprising at all. Flavs is quality, and I don't really understand all the stick he gets on this board. Yes, he is not as commanding in the area as he could be, but he is an unrivalled shotstopper.

Harry Threadgold would have played more games for us but he had trouble with the new floodlights that affected his vision. Damn the new technology.

Yeah, remember reading that in the SUFC book, what a legend Harry was. He really looked 'special'.

It is surprising because, however much I rate Darryl, I have always believed Sammy to be a better 'keeper. This goes some way to prove me wrong, therefore i'm surprised.

I think you've answered your own question there, but it cuts both ways.

When Darryl makes a great stop, people sometimes forget his inability to command his area and how it might have cost us. On the other goalkeeping-gloved hand, when his failure to grab a cross in the six yard box costs us, people also forget his great stops that have kept us in matches many, many times.

No different I guess from when Maher floated a free-kick too long, when Gower fails to beat a man or put a cross in, or when Nicky Bailey fails to pass water.

;)

I still think he's a cracking 'little' keeper, and his record is something of an eye-opener. He has his short-comings *ahem* but, if the defence is aware of them and acts accordingly, it shouldn't necessarily be the problem we sometimes think it is.

When the team is out of form people want a nice easy explanation.

Our indifferent form earlier this season wasnt due to Flahavan yet a lot of blame got put on his shoulders when in reality we lacked confidence as a team from a season of relegation and without any cutting edge up front to give us that confidence boost. When Collis had his run nothing changed and then it was the centre backs who got the blame.

Now we are in good form no one is questioning whether Flavs is good enough....

Flahavan is a great shotstopper but as you say isnt as commanding or as big as some would like, but he is certainly good enough for this level.
